With over 2 million members and supporters nationwide and more than 20,000 in Indiana, the primary mission of the Sierra Club is to "explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment". Consistent with this mission the Sierra Club and South Shore Clean Cities (SSCC) share common objectives and have partnered in several programs to benefit the people of Lake County Indiana and all of Indiana. As a result of a legal settlement between environmental organizations and British Petroleum (BP) over the expansion of the Whiting refinery, South Shore Clean Cities was enlisted to administer a $500,000 program to reduce diesel emissions in the wider Lake County are. This collaboration has resulted in grants to cities and towns, hospitals, law enforcement, schools and many others to install diesel emission projects ranging from school buses to hospital emergency vehicles. In another collaborative program in Southern Indiana resulting from a settlement with American Electric Power over the Rockport coal plant, the Sierra Club and SSCC have partnered to provide $500,000 in similar projects to reduce diesel emissions around the Rockport plant in Spencer County. The Sierra Club is also active promoting the use of electric vehicles, more mass transit options, and the transition of Indiana's energy system from coal-fired power to cleaner renewable energy. The NIPSCO Feed-in Tariff Program is underway to pay businesses and residential customers to product their own power from solar panels and provide that power to other customers within the area. This program is now open for applications.

Indiana Offering Grants for Propane Autogas School Buses |
The Indiana Office of Energy Development (OED) Announced August 19th at the South Shore Clean Cities Green Fleet event that Indiana Public School Corporations that own their own buses can begin applying for a share of $300,000 through the OED's 2015 Indiana Propane School Bus grant program.
This is the OED's first grant round specifically dedicated to propane autogas school buses. According to the agency, schools can benefit from propane buses in a variety of ways, including decreasing children's exposure to harmful emissions, lowering maintenance costs through the use of a cleaner-burning fuel and increasing fuel diversity.
We're excited to open applications for this propane school bus grant program," says OED Director Tristan Vance. "Projects such as these can reduce costs, improve fueling options and utilize domestic energy resources."

South Shore Clean Cities will work with its members to apply for these Grant's on behalf of the State! Please contact South Shore Clean Cities for additional information 219-644-3690.
