Clean Cities coordinators provide local steakholders with hands-on assistance every day. Clean Cities, however, goes far beyond individual coalitions, which are supported by a national program housed at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
From safeguarding nuclear materials to developing efficient products, DOE uses transformative science and technical solutions to increase America's energy, environmental, and economic security. Through its 17 national laboratories, DOE largely focuses on research and development, ranging from better understanding the building blocks of energy to improving photovoltaic solar cells.
The Clean Cities Program is part of the Vehicle Technologies Office, which is in turn part of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The Vehicle Technologies Office supports research on a variety of technologies, including plug-in electric vehicles, advanced combustion engines, lightweight materials, and alternative fuels.
Clean Cities provides the bridge for technologies to move from pre-commercial testing onto the road. The national program provides objective, data-driven information to help fleets and consumers choose the petroleum reduction technologies that best meet their needs. The Alternative Fuels Data Center and FuelEconomy.gov offer nearly 200 case studies, more than 20,000 alternative fuel station locations (Featured to the right), more than 1,000 laws and incentives, information on more than 36,000 vehicles, and 14 other interactive tools. Through its Tiger Teams, the national program also offers technical assistance to help stakeholders overcome obstacles to using alternative fuels and advanced technology vehicles. Some of these stakeholders include the 29 national parks participating in the Clean Cities National Parks Initiative and 26 large private fleets in the National Clean Fleets Partnership.
Lastly, the national Clean Cities program supports local coalitions like South Shore Clean Cities through specialty training, networking opportunities, mentoring programs and much more. Our coalitions make Clean Cities a unique program in the federal government, which bring together local and national expertise in powerful and innovative ways.

President Obama Signs Alternative Fuel Tax Fix into Law |
President Barack Obama has signed into law a comprehensive highway funding bill, H.R.3236, whose many provisions include a measure meant to ensure that liquefied natural gas (LNG) and propane autogas are taxed fairly relative to diesel and gasoline, respectively. The law is especially considered a major victory for the natural gas vehicle industry, which has long pushed for a so-called "LNG fix".
The alt-fuel measure was originally included in a highway bill that passed the U.S. House of Representatives on July 15. However, following disputes between the House and US. Senate over several issues, the House passed H.R.3236 on Wednesday in order to provide a three-month extension of federal dollars for the national highway program - just days before a funding deadline.

Senator Donnelly Expresses Concerns about Proposed Biodiesel Volumes, Urges EPA to Make Revisions in Final Rule |

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly, a member of the Senate Ag Committee, today sent a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy with a bipartisan group of senators outlining their concerns that the proposed biodiesel volumes for 2016 and 2017 fail to adequately recognize the domestic biodiesel industry's production capacity.
Donnelly and 35 other U.S. Senators wrote in the letter to Administrator McCarthy,
"We remain concerned that the proposed biodiesel volumes for 2016 and 2017 fail to adequately recognize the domestic biodiesel industry's production capacity and its ability to increase production...While the proposal put forward by EPA is an improvement over the November 2013 proposal, it would only grow biodiesel volumes to 1.9 billion gallons by 2017, which is just slightly more than the industry's actual production of more than 1.8 billion gallons in 2013. We believe the domestic biodiesel industry is fully capable of additional growth and urge the EPA to revise the volumes in the final rule."
