NACPM is pleased to share good news with you

Congratulations to Jennie Joseph and her team at The Birth Place!!

Despite being the richest country in the world and spending the most money on maternity care of any country in the world, the U.S. ranks 50th in the world for maternal mortality - the worst of any industrialized nation.

Every Mother Counts, a campaign to end preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world, has awarded its first US grant to The Birth Place Midwifery Clinic, led by Jennie Joseph, LM, CPM.  Grants of $63,000 from this foundation will support prenatal care and education for low-income and uninsured women who come to Jennie's clinic in Central Florida.

The JJ Way

"EMC has done incredible work around the globe, and we are thrilled to be their first U.S. partner. We are working every day to make sure that women receive the care and resources they deserve to protect their health and their babies; no one is turned away," said Jennie Joseph of The Birth Place. "Like EMC, The Birth Place is committed to helping all moms have the pregnancy and birth of their dreams, including the most vulnerable populations."

Every Mother Counts, founded by Turlington Burns in 2010, is an advocacy organization with the goal of linking the public directly with life saving efforts to prevent deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth worldwide. To learn more, or to donate visit: www.everymothercounts.org.

The Birth Place is a unique full service facility providing prenatal care, lab services, educational classes, doulas and mentors for pregnant women in crisis.  Jennie and her team have been funded by the non-profit foundation Commonsense Childbirth.  To learn more, or donate visit:  www.commonsensechildbirth.org.

Jennie's proven system of midwifery management has successfully reduced infant mortality, low birth weight and premature babies in her practice. Her methods, known as The JJ Way, have been developed over 25 years of practice, and she has trained many student midwives, staff members and peers in these methods that have demonstrated improved outcomes for the most vulnerable populations. NACPM is thrilled with this much-needed support from Every Mother Counts for Jennie's crucial work.

Childbirth Connection Releases Listening to Mothers III
Listening To Mothers III
Listening to Mothers III kicked off on May 9th with results from the third national U.S survey of women's pregnancy and birth experiences. As with previous Listening to Mothers surveys, the latest data show that risky procedures are overused, many beneficial practices are underused, and all too often women lack the support and knowledge required to effectively navigate their maternity care.

The Listening to MothersSM Initiative is part of Childbirth Connections' ongoing efforts to understand the maternity care system from the point of view of the childbearing woman.  This third survey included 2400 mothers who had given birth to single babies in U.S. hospitals from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012.  The survey aims to understand experiences and perspectives of childbearing women and to use this knowledge to improve maternity policy, practice, education, and research.
