Students at the Turning Point
By: Neil Jones, Executive Director

Neil Jones, Executive Director

What was your turning point? Was it a new job, event or learning experience that made a profound change in your life? Or perhaps you can identify with famous statesman that once said, "My life is one long curve of turning points". At Literacy Action, adult students and tutors are creating opportunities every day that are changing lives by improving literacy skills.
While time will tell if we are witnessing major life changing shifts or turning points on a long curve, we can say for a fact that students and tutors are taking action to make their lives better. In this newsletter, read about two students, Allen and Marisa who have created their own turning point.

Student Allen Glover Receives Personal Care Provider Certificate
Allen is a student from Conway who has worked with his tutor since 2010 to expand his employment opportunities. Recently,
Allen completed a certificate program as a personal care provider. As a result, he received a promotion and a raise.

Marisa was faced with the fact that her reading scores were not high enough to gain admission into community college. Without the training she would receive, she would not

be able to achieve her goal to work in the medical technology field. She enrolled in Literacy Action's first Taking Action for the Future class and after over 60 hours of classroom instruction passed her exam that will give her admission to Pulaski Tech. Marisa's test scores were also
high enough for her to be certified college ready, thus avoiding costly remedial class work.

English As a Successful Language
Tutors Share Stories of Success with Their ESL Students

Renee' and Mirna

Renee' Trammell, Tutor Since 2008

Renee' with her student, Mirna

Renee' Trammell has been working with her Guatemalan student, Mirna, for almost five years. Mirna is 23 years old and lives

with her family.

"Her parents wanted her to move to the U.S. so she would have a chance to better herself, as her siblings had done before her. She is so appreciative of the

chance to learn English and unless she is ill, never misses our classes together.", Renee' Said.

Mirna only understood a little English when they first met, but now just after five short years, she is enrolled in Adult Education classes working towards her GED.

"Her goal is to attend college and become a nurse.", Renee' Said.  "She's dreamed of being a nurse since she was little."

Through the years, Renee' has become very close to Mirna. "We celebrate our birthdays together, her nieces' christenings, family birthdays, and just-for-fun dinners in her home."

These tutoring sessions have inspired Renee in many ways. "I have learned determination from this young woman, who only began learning our language five years ago and will now be getting her GED this year.

She's a prime example of someone having a dream and not letting

anyone or anything change her focus, even when it looked like the odds were not stacked in her favor." Renee' is extremely proud of Mirna's success and believes that this is a chapter of her life that she will never forget.

Heidi and Oscar
By: Heidi Williams, Tutor Since 2008

Heidi Williams, LACA Tutor
Oscar, whose native language is Spanish, has been my student for almost two years.  When we first met, I was immediately impressed by his friendly demeanor, energy and his eagerness to begin classes. At our first meeting, he came prepared with pencils and notebook in hand, and his enthusiasm for learning has not waned. Oscar is employed full-time and relies on public transportation, yet he faithfully attends our weekly Saturday class with his homework completed and armed with lots of questions!

When we first began, Oscar's command of the English language was very limited so we began with Laubach Way to English Book 1, using both the skill book and workbook so that he could not only improve his reading and comprehension of simple stories, but also his pronunciation skills.   We practice the English language sounds that are the most challenging for him at each session, and we have both seen a marked improvement in his pronunciation skills.   After completing Books 1 and 2, we have now progressed to Laubach Way to English Book 3, and Oscar is proud of his improved reading and comprehension abilities as the stories and grammar exercises become more challenging.  We also use the Oxford Picture Dictionary, which he has found to be a very useful tool because it is subject- specific and provides him with words and definitions he can use in his daily activities.

Oscar says that attending ESL classes has enhanced  his quality of life.  He now interacts more comfortably with his co-workers and is no longer hesitant to ask questions, thus boosting his confidence and morale.  He wants to continue his ESL classes and hopes one day to work in a field that will allow him to work with the public and be of service to others in his community.

Being a volunteer tutor for Literacy Action is an enriching experience, and I look forward to continuing to assist Oscar and other adult students to achieve their goals.

Pat and Kunhong

By: Pat Bell, Tutor Since 1994

Pat Bell, LACA Tutor

Kunhong (Kelly) came to Little Rock from China in 2008 and was soon married to Johnny who met her via the internet. Johnny had previously visited with her and her family in China. I first met Kelly in June, 2008, when she and Johnny came to the International Class which (my wife) Mary and I teach at Pleasant Valley Church of Christ.

Kelly was anxious to improve her English skills and soon started attending the group ESL class which I was tutoring. She also enrolled in business and accounting courses at UALR and did very well in spite of her language issues. By determination, drive, hard work, and a "never-give-up" attitude, she was awarded a Master's Degree in Business administration in 2012 and is currently employed doing accounting work.

With these accomplishments, most people might say "enough: and drop out of ESL. However, Kelly continues to attend my ESL class, along with three others. We are currently in the Challenger Series, Level 8 (last in the series).

Mary and I have become good friends with Kelly and Johnny. It has been a real pleasure to observe how Kelly has improved her English skills so much and well she has adapted to our Southern culture.

First Taking Action for the Future Class Completed

We are extremely pleased to announce that the eight students who enrolled in our free intensive reading and writing class have successfully completed the eight-week-long course, passed their Compass tests, and are eligible to enroll in Pulaski Tech! All of the students were determined to get into college and learn to improve their reading and writing skills with 100% attendance! Thank you to everybody who was involved in this program; we couldn't have done it without you. We are so excited for the next TAFF class that starts September 23.
