Tutors Needed for Fall TAFF Program!!

We are currently looking for dependable tutors for the fall TAFF program that is hosted at Pulaski Technical College. A TAFF tutor needs to be available twice a week for an hour each session. Two hours a week can really make a huge difference for adults seeking to enter community college.

Do you think English is easy?
Read this and see if it changes your mind:

-
The bandage was wound around the wound.

-
The farm was used to produce produce.

-
The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

-
When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

-
The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

-
Upon seeing a tear in the painting, I shed a tear.

-
Since there is no time, like the present, I thought it was a good time to present the present.

Help people who need to learn English navigate through this complicated language!

Students Give 100%

By: Neil Jones

As we enter the last weeks of the summer TAFF program, it is remarkable to witness our students' determination to finish the program. The class meets at Pulaski Tech for 90 minutes, four days a week with two hours of tutoring each week. Who would

have dared  predict that all of the students would finish the course, much less have perfect attendance? With this level of work ethic, it is easy to see how most of these students will use this opportunity to gain admission to community college and then move on to acquire skills needed for family sustaining jobs. They plan to become automotive mechanics, medical assistants,

graphic artists or to work as culinary professionals. It is difficult to imagine that any of this would be possible without the opportunity to improve critical literacy skills and the support of dedicated teachers, tutors and community partners.

Are you ready to get engaged by helping adults improve literacy skills? We have over 20 students waiting for a one-on one tutor, and we need tutors for the fall TAFF class. Call Kathy Griffin, to explore how you can make a difference in our community.

Constant Contact Supports Literacy

Thanks to everyone who helped Literacy Action raise donations through Constant Contact Charity Auction. With your help, we won third place in the national contest! These funds will go to upgrading our technology to better communicate with tutors and students.

"We raised thousands of dollars this year as part of our employee-led charity auction. A big reason for the event's success was that we knew the funds were going to passionate, impactful, organizations like yours. We have been inspired by your life-changing efforts to promote literacy, and we are proud to have you as a Constant Contact customer.
I hope this prize will enable you and your organization to touch even more lives this year and beyond. Good luck and congratulations once again."

Friendships Made through Tutoring
By: Catherine Spradley, Conway

Catherine Spradley, Literacy Tutor
I will never forget the first day I met with Christi for tutoring.  She came into our tutoring room a little shy and quiet, but with a big smile on her face and immediately gave me a hug.  Her obvious desire to learn was a big motivation for me and we jumped right into our first session.  We started with the basics to make sure we had a good foundation and to 'practice' our training and learning styles.  Christi then breezed through her workbook which gave her a sense of satisfaction and was a great place to start. This was only the beginning of a a great journey and friendship for both of us.
We have been working together for a few months, and Christi's reading progress has been remarkable! The Laubach Series further improves her spelling, grammar, and comprehension which give her real tools to use in daily life.  She is proud of her accomplishments so far, has more self confidence, and loves sharing her progress with friends and family.  As a tutor, I feel pure joy at seeing her grow and develop pride for her accomplishments.  We have become good friends working together and we especially enjoy sending pen pal letters to friends across the country.  I also have a greater appreciation for access to good education and observant teachers who have worked so that no child graduates High School without being able to read.  I have made a great friendship with Christi and I encourage people with some spare time to consider volunteering as a literacy tutor; it's a fun and meaningful experience!
