Children whose parents are involved with them in family literacy activities score an average of ten points higher on standar-dized tests.

Improved literacy helps adults make less errors in medication and treatment, reducing the cost of health care for the whole community.
Thank You So Much, Jeff Daily and Bryan Stafford!

Two local film-makers, Jeff Daily (director) and Bryan Stafford (camera), teamed up to shoot a small, informational video about Literacy Action this January.

We are most thankful for the work that they put into the project.  Their time and effort will allow Literacy Action to shed light on our mission, our students, and our impact in the commu-nity with this video.

Again, thank you guys so much!

Volunteers Step Up to the Challenge:  And You Can, Too!

by:  Neil Jones

At the beginning of the New Year, we were in crisis mode. Our list of students waiting for a tutor was bulging and we had only five people signed up to attend the next tutor-training workshop. With new students coming to the office everyday asking for help.... what to do? We did what any non-profit would do in this situation:  we sent out a desperate appeal. The response was terrific! Over the last few weeks, 25 new prospective tutors have contacted us to ask how they can help. While the pending crisis is addressed for now, recruiting new volunteer tutors is an on going process that can succeed only if we all work together.

Here is how you can help:

  • Share information with your friends and work colleagues, like how one out of ten adults in our community struggles with reading every day. Most of our volunteers become aware of our organization though word of mouth. You could do this personally or through social media, like Facebook.
  • Encourage individuals interested in learning more to visit our web site or call our office.
  • Bring a friend to one of our events. This is a great way to have a lot of fun and also learn more about the work of our organization. See the Events Update section to the right for more details.

In 2012, Literacy Action volunteer tutors logged in over 7,000 hours teaching reading and English language skills. Stories abound on how tutors make a profound and lasting difference in the lives of their students. Over the last month we learned:  Maria is now officially a new U.S. citizen; Jean has applied to junior college; and Chris used his new skills to land a new job. How does this success happen? We are able to match motivated adult learners with dedicated volunteer tutors.  Someone took the time tell a prospective tutor about Literacy Action. It's really simple:  speak up and make a huge difference in someone's life.

Virginia Ayers
Virginia Ayers

Congratulations to my student, Virginia Ayers, who just completed Challenger 6! Virginia worked at Dollar Tree for 14 years and was let go last summer. When faced with the prospect of online job applications, she knew she need-ed to improve her literacy skills.

Virginia and I were paired in October. Sometimes during our sessions, we fill out job applications together, including Dollar General's, which consists of 63 "what if" scenarios! We started with Chal-lenger 5 and are now in Challenger 7. Virginia is highly motivated and loves reading stories. Currently, we are reading Bud, Not Buddy together.

Due to Virginia's swift progress, I made the decision to re-TABE her after only 24hrs of tutoring. Virginia has ad-vanced her reading levels in just four months! I'm so proud of Virginia's dedication and hard work. Students like her are an inspiration to all of us.

Happy Hour for Shine a Light on Literacy

On Tuesday, January 29th, we hosted a recruitment happy hour at Crush Wine Bar in Argenta.  It was a huge success!

Seventeen volunteers showed up to learn more about how to get in-volved in Shine a Light on Literacy, which takes place on September 26th.  If you couldn't make it, have no fear!  There is still plenty of time, and plenty of ways, to help out.

Just give us a call at 501-372-7323.  We can't wait to make this the best Shine a Light on Literacy yet!
