Goodbye Shelly

After serving as LA's Director of Literacy Programs for over a year, Shelly Owens is leaving us. Shelly has decided to go back to full-time teaching and has taken a job with the Huda Academy Islamic School. Fortunately for us, she will continue to tutor her students through LA.  We wish her all the best and know she'll be great at her new job. She will surely be missed in our office. Good Luck Shelly!

Literacy Action Newsletter
December 2012

Greetings!

Literacy Meets Christmas Future

Tradition plays a big part in the way we view the holidays. I love to hear familiar Christmas songs playing on the radio. Our family trims the tree with sentimental ornaments given to us by friends or made by our kids. We spend hours baking special holiday treats that bring back memories of relatives long past. Even though we love our Christmas traditions, it is exciting to see individuals and families experience Christmas in a new light. For many adult learners in our literacy programs, this is exactly what is happening.

Consider the joy of reading a Christmas story to your child for the first time, or even actually understanding and interpreting instructions on how to assemble a special gift, or finally being able to read along and participate in holiday religious services at your community church. This Christmas, the future looks a whole lot brighter for adult learners who have acquired new jobs, achieved U.S. Citizenship, or learned to speak English through the help of literacy tutors. Literacy Action's mission is to change the lives of adults and families in Central Arkansas though improved literacy. Just maybe in the process, we are helping to shape new traditions for Christmas future.

During this holiday season, take a look at all of the ways you can get engaged. . We need tutors! At last count there are over 25 adults waiting to be paired with a tutor. OR ...Make a donation! We will put your donation to work right here in our community to teach adults basic literacy and English speaking skills. Merry Christmas.

New Tutor Training Workshop Format
By Alice Kunce Alice Kunce

Saturday Training Shortened

On December 1, 2012, Literacy Action held a basic literacy tutor training event. Instead of the six hour marathon many of you experienced, tutors attended a four hour jump-start. This new format is designed to help tutors get started quickly. Dr. Mary Mosley, Kelly Bullington, Louene Lipsmeyer, Katie Keen, and Alice Kunce facilitated a multi-module training. Each woman led a module and shared personal experiences with the potential tutors.

Modules included: contacting your student for the first time, who is the adult learner, and how learning disabilities can make reading a challenge. In order to provide more support for our tutors, we will now host follow-up sessions. After the four-hour Saturday, tutors will meet with Kathy Griffin to receive their curriculum materials. Kathy will explain in-depth the curriculum assigned to the tutor's student. Feedback from tutors let us know that most tutors only use one curriculum during their tenure. This new approach allows for one-on-one instruction of the specific curriculum the tutor will use, rather than a brief over view of all three. Once the tutor and student have met for four sessions, the tutor will contact Kathy with an update. These first four sessions between student and tutor are now considered "on the job training." By checking in after four sessions, LA hopes to give tutors timely support. The check-in is a great opportunity for the tutor to let LA know what's working, what's not, and how LA can help.

5 Step Tutor Training

  1. Training Workshop - New agenda designed to get tutors started quickly.
  2. Student Assignment - Meet with LA to map out student learning plan.
  3. Hands-On Training - Tutor meets with student following the lesson plan. LA checks on progress.
  4. Training Re-Cap - Tutor and LA fine tune the lesson plan. Also, tutor receives follow-up training and certification.
  5. Tutor and Student Meet Twice Weekly - tutor submits weekly progress reports/instructional hours, LACA assists as needed.

Mahnaz

We weren't too far into our lessons before she told me. Although her vocabulary was simpler and her speech slower, I understood.  She had moved here from Tehran in order to receive treatments from UAMS and met with me in between the chemo to learn English.

She was often exhausted by the time she came in; her wig and face dripping with sweat brought on by the unfamiliar Arkansas summer, but she never stopped smiling, loving, and attending lessons, eager to learn.

Our lessons consisted of all things English, such as verb conjugations, vocabulary building, conversation practice with small talk, but eventually always would end with questions about her health and experience fighting breast cancer in a country in which she did not speak the language.

She would ask me how to tell her doctors: I hurt here. What is going to happen next? How does it work? I'm scared. We talked about everything, including how she was feeling and what to expect. She wanted to know a lot of medical terminology that I couldn't explain. When I would apologetically explain that I didn't know, she would sweetly smile and say, "Masalay nest," which is no problem in Farsi.

We studied two times a week for an hour each session for many months. During these lessons, she was mainly just glad to be out of the house, not in the hospital, but we also became close and developed a friendship. I was there to teach her English, which eased her situation and lightened her burden.  She was able to communicate and understand what was going on during a time of great fear and stress. She ended up teaching me about living a good life, having passion to learn, and being kind to others no matter what your circumstances.

Although we had to end our lessons due to scheduling conflicts, our friendship lasts to this day. I visit her at her job at the cookie shop from time to time to see how she's doing. We are both happy to report her cancer is in remission. She has not had to take chemo for months now, and she is able to work regularly and enjoy her normal, healthy life. We still try to meet up for coffee or a quick English lesson sometimes, but when either of our schedules won't allow it she still gives me her kind smile and says, Masalay nest. Next time.

Kathy said, "I am so excited to have this opportunity to serve the adult population of Central Arkansas. As a long time educator, I know that increasing adult literacy will change that person's life, as well as the lives of his or her family and community. Illiteracy is one of our biggest social and economic problems. I want to be a part of the solution!"
