Cayuga County and the Finger Lakes can really be a winter wonderland with glistening trees, shimmering lakes and crisp, cool air. The winter months also bring the excitement of snow sports such as cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowshoeing. But, most all they gives us a chance to relax, recharge and re-energize after the busy holiday season!

The Sweet Flavor of the Finger Lakes
Sweet Treat Trail

The 2013 Finger Lakes Sweet Treat Trail Tasting Tour was a great success with 2,147 people traveling at least a portion of the trail. As a bonus the Trail received some great press and was even featured on YNN when Mike O'Brian, 'The Getaway Guy," made a visit. Trail partners will be getting together on Tuesday, January 14 at 12 noon to talk about activities for 2014. If you produce a 'sweet treat' made with local products, are open for visitors on a regular basis, and would like to learn more about the Finger Lakes Sweet Treat Trail, please join us for this organizational meeting. Please call the Tourism Office, 315-255-1658 to register.

Golf is Great in the Finger Lakes

Whether as a primary motivation for a vacation or simply as a secondary activity, golf attracts  millions of visitors worldwide. The benefits of attracting golfers are many as they purchase goods and services while on their trip and support a wide range of businesses such as hotels, restaurants, retailers, and of course golf facilities themselves. The International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) reports that the daily spend of golfers is frequently at least double of the general leisure tourist.

   Golfing in Cayuga County

With this in mind, plans are already underway to promote Cayuga County's challenging golf courses as part of the "Golf is Great in Rochester and the Finger Lakes" promotion spearheaded by VisitRochester and including Genesee, Ontario, Cayuga, Wayne and Monroe Counties. The program includes a brochure, packages, presence at the Toronto Golf Show, print advertising, monthly e-blasts, a listing in the NYS Golf Guide and brochure distribution at numerous information centers.

If you have a golf package or any type of special promotion for golfers, please email it to the tourism office, meg@tourcayuga.com right away so we can feature your business on our web site. Don't miss out on this opportunity!

Haunted History

Cayuga County Tourism will be participating in New York State's "Haunted History Trail" in  2014. The trail includes haunted sites in 21 counties across New York State. In Cayuga County, visitors will learn about the Seward House Museum's Haunted History Tours, Seward House - Haunted History Tours Fort Hill Cemetery's Walking Tours, Screamer's Hollow and Captain Jack's Pirate Ship. If your organization is planning a haunted event or activity in 2014, please contact the Tourism Office so that we can include you in this promotion.   Also, hotels with haunted deals or packages are highly encouraged and will be promoted as well. Check out www.hauntedhistorytrail.com to see what this spooky and fun trail is all about!

Distrubute your brochure in Weedsport

The brochure rack we maintain at the Arby's/Tim Horton's in Weedsport continues to be a popular resource for visitors with 4,214 brochures being distributed during 2013. If you would like us to include your hotel or attraction in the rack display in 2014, please deliver 100 brochures and your check in the amount of $50.00 ($100 for non-Cayuga County attractions/lodging) to the Cayuga County CVB, 131 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY 13021. We will call you when we need additional brochures. With postage rates rising again, this is a very cost-effective way of distributing your brochure that you may want to consider.

Snowmobile Maps available

With the first significant snowfall on the ground, snowmobile weather has arrived and the  2013-2014 Snowmobile Trail Map for Central New York and the Southern Tier is now available at the Cayuga County Office of Tourism. The map features trails from Tug Hill to Lake Ontario to Whitney Point and everywhere in between. Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Tioga, and Tompkins County Trails are all included in this full color foldout map of the region. Send your snowmobiling visitors our way for this comprehensive map! ($5.00 per map)

Welcome to the Board!

Andy Roblee, Facilities Manager for the Seward House Museum, joined the Cayuga County Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Director's in January. The Tourism Board co-sponsored Andy's participation in the Leadership Cayuga program and now several years later, we can tap into his leadership skills. What a great return on our investment!

In the works
January may seem to be a slow time of the year in the tourism industry but at the Tourism Office, we are very busy with four major projects in the works: -
  • 2014 Visitors Guide to Cayuga County
  • FREE Cayuga County Visitor's Map
  • FREE Cayuga County Trivia Booklet
  • New presentation folders for press kits and group sales

Stay tuned as we finalize these projects and get them ready for the 2014 tourism season.
