Happy May!  April showers bring May flowers!

May is somewhat unique because there are so many holidays and special days that are important to many people. For example, Mother's Day, is the second Sunday in May, Cinco de Mayo is May 5th, National Nurses Day is May 6th, National Teachers Week is the first full week in May, Memorial Day is the last Monday in May, and of course, we can't forget National Chocolate Parfait Day on May 1st! Sorry, but I had to throw that last one in the mix even though it pales in comparison and importance to these other days. This dessert holiday dates back to 1894 and may have originated in France since parfait means "perfect" in French. And the parfait is oh so good!

Join us as we take a few moments to discuss this special month as well as spotlight our volunteer of the month, Eileen Simons.

Volunteer Spotlight
Name:  Eileen Simons
Occupation:  Attorney, looking to change careers to higher education
Time with JFS:  Since December of 2012
Volunteer Position: Friendly Visitor

Eileen has always been drawn to working with the elderly. Perhaps it is because she didn't grow up with grandparents, she says. She enjoys spending time with this population and feels that our society doesn't spend enough time or give enough respect to the elderly. Fortunately, JFS has a wonderful program that offers an opportunity for Eileen to utilize her ability to relate to people in this
special age group and help fulfill an important need at the same time. She enjoys participating in the Friendly Visitor Program and has developed a wonderful bond with a few of the clients. Listening to stories they tell, witnessing the love they have for each other, and learning from their experiences, benefits the listener and the visitor as well. It's a mutual exchange of love and respect, according to Eileen.
In her spare time, Eileen enjoys reading, exercising and traveling. She has a very active 11 year old daughter who keeps her family very busy.

Thank you Eileen for all that you do as a Friendly Visitor. How wonderful to have a volunteer with so much empathy and insight. We are fortunate that you give your time to respect and truly listen to and enrich other's lives.

Happy Mother's Day Sunday, May 8th

The first Mother's Day was May 10, 1908 in Philadelphia. Celebrate this important day with Mom or someone who is like a Mom to you!

May 6-12 is National Nurse's Week
Every year we recognize nurses for their many contributions and commitment to quality health care by celebrating National Nurses Day in May. In 1953, Dorothy Sunderland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare asked doctor-team.jpgPresident Eisenhower to proclaim a special day for nurses. On the birthday of Florence Nightingale, International Nurses Day is celebrated. There is also a School Nurses Day and a Student Nurses Day. Nurses are special and deserve to be celebrated for the skilled work they do in aiding patients and providing comfort to all who need it.
