Happy March to all!
With the roller coaster weather we've had in February, it's hard to think about spring, but it's coming.
Daylight Savings time is Sunday, March 13th. Won't it be great to have more time after work and school to enjoy some daylight? Then we can look forward to spring which begins on March 20th. The warmer weather, flowers, and fun outdoor activities can't come soon enough for some of us!
This month we will spotlight our JFS volunteer and have some fun for
St. Patrick's Day, Thursday, March 17th. We'll also get serious and discuss the importance of learning about chronic kidney disease and National Kidney Month.
Make a difference, VOLUNTEER! Recommend a friend too!

Occupation: Math Academy Mentor
Time with JFS: since October 2015
Volunteer Position: 5th grade special education teaching assistant
Sarah enjoys working as a 5th grade teaching assistant at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. Since Sarah loves math and teaching, she decided it would be a good match to become a Math Academy Mentor. She finds it exciting to assist and encourage the students to grasp the never-ending connections that make-up mathematics. Sarah enjoys having fun bonding with the students at the school. At snack time, homework help, group activities and games, she participates in conversations that help her relate to and better understand her students. In her spare time, Sarah likes to play guitar and piano, hike, run and spend time with family and friends.
Thank you Sarah for all that you do for our organization. We are truly fortunate to have you assist us in such an enthusiastic and competent way to provide these services. We bet the students are thrilled you are there for them!

February Hours & T-Shirts
|
JFS volunteers have spent 226 hours helping others in the Metrowest community during the month of February! Thank you to all of our volunteers for
spending time and dedicating yourself to benefit of others.
| Thanks for Your Helping Hands! |
Our clients thank you and we appreciate you for standing up for those in need!
Once you've reached 20 hours of service you are eligible for a t-shirt. Those that reached that mark are:
- Jamie Brass
- Victor Dietz
- Jef Fellows
- Arnold Young
Congratulations! Please let us know how you'd like to collect your t-shirt!
Please remember this is based on the number of hours recorded in our system. If you volunteer for programs other than Wilson or Patient Navigator the system does not auto calculate your hours. If you don't know how to log your hours of service, let us know and we'll help you!

"May the road rise up to meet You" - March 17th
|
St. Patrick's Day is held in honor of Saint Patrick who in the 400's AD brought Christianity to the Irish people. It is day of celebrating Irish history, traditions, and customs.
It has been said that everyone is a little Irish on St. Patrick's Day.
So "Erin Go Bragh," to all! This means, Ireland Forever!

March is National Kidney Month
|
Keep your kidneys healthy. Kidneys filter wastes and extra water out of your blood to make urine. According to the American Kidney fund, kidneys also control chemicals in the body, help control your blood pressure, help keep bones healthy, and help make red blood cells.
There are several ways that we can protect our kidneys:

- eat a diet low in salt and fat
- be physically active
- keep a healthy weight
- control cholesterol
- take medication as directed
- limit alcohol and don't smoke.
When your kidneys don't work well a person can become ill. Permanently damaged kidneys can lead to chronic kidney disease. This can lead to kidney failure and either the need for kidney dialysis or kidney transplant.
For more information about your kidneys, go to www.kidneyfund.org.

AmeriCorps, New American Integration Program (NAIP)
In honor of March 5-12 being AmeriCorps week, we thought we'd highlight the AmeriCorps program at JFS. Currently in its second year at JFS, the New American Integration Program provides an opportunity for developing professionals to commit to a year of service providing support to Refugees and Immigrants in Metrowest. The NAIP is in partnership with MIRA Coalition, English for New Bostonians, and Massachusetts Office of Refugees and Immigrants. JFS recruits one AmeriCorps member each year to work with the after-school program, provide services to Refugees, assist with Citizenship applications, and recruit volunteers to serve the immigrant community. One recent special project coordinated by the AmeriCorps member was hosting a Voting 101 workshop for new citizens. To learn more about the workshop click here.
