Update Regarding Canine Influenza . . .

Diagnostic test results from the University of Georgia this week confirmed that the virus isolated from the single dog in Metro Atlanta was H3N2.  This is the newer strain of dog flu, and is the same strain as the recent Chicago outbreak..  This continues to be the only case that has been reported.  The Georgia Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA) is continuing to keep the veterinary community informed, and we will continue to share important information with you.

Key points:

  • Vaccination is not recommended, since the canine influenza vaccine most likely does not protect against H3N2.  The vaccine offers protection against the typical dog flu strain, H3N8.

  • Avoid exposure by avoiding high risk, high density dog environments, such as boarding facilities, kennels, doggie day-care and dog parks.  Rather than boarding your pet at this time, keep them at home or take them with you.
  • Contact your veterinarian if your dog exhibits signs of lethargy, reduced appetite, sneezing, coughing, runny nose or eyes.
  • It is important to note that 95-99% of dogs recover from this virus.  It is rarely fatal.  This virus is not known to affect people.
