Thanksgiving Table Scraps...Just say "NO"

Does Your Cat or Dog Get "Stressed Out"?
Keep the Photos Coming!

Thanksgiving Table Scraps . . . JUST SAY "NO"

As you get ready to sit down to that delicious Thanksgiving feast, your dog is sure to be right by your chair, begging for some of what you are having.  Why wouldn't he, right?   But stay strong people!  It is a fact that unexpected food-related illnesses increase over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend.  Just ask our emergency team.  From pancreatitis to gastroenteritis, dogs and cats are getting sick from scraps.  Here are some tips:

  • Take out the trash immediately to avoid your dog getting into it later.  And beware of counter-surfing (as demonstrated by our friend Scarlet Carmin above).
  • No table scraps or leftovers, especially bones. Soft bones, like those in poultry, can splinter and cause obstructions in your pet's digestive system.
  • Remember that raw or undercooked turkey can harbor salmonella, which can cause the same disastrous gastrointestinal affects in our pets as it does in us.
  • Onions and garlic have a supporting role in stuffing and other side dishes, but can be dangerous when ingested by our pets, especially cats.
If you must let your pet indulge, give them some pet-safe veggies like broccoli or carrots, or a small taste of plain, well-cooked turkey. However, you really are better off to just resist those oh-so pitiful puppy dog looks and save yourself potential heartache - and your pet potential bellyache - later on.

Does Your Dog or Cat Have Stress Issues?
Dr. Delong
Dr. Louise DeLong from TVV Lilburn-St.Mtn. discusses stress and anxiety issues in cats and dogs.

Just like in people, dogs and cats can get stressed and have anxiety and fear-related problems.  However, because our dogs and cats cannot speak to us, it can be difficult to detect behavior associated with these feelings. They do not know that closing their eyes and taking deep breaths during these situations may help calm them down; nor can they ask their veterinarian for medication. Instead, they rely on their owner to pick up on their symptoms and somewhat decipher what they are trying to say. Early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of anxiety disorders in dogs and cats is especially important, considering that prolonged stress or anxiety can result in physical and emotional pathologic conditions. Furthermore, these problems can potentially shorten a pet's lifespan, as well as alter a human-pet bond.  Read more ...
