Feline Veterinary Care. . .
Have We Seen Your Cat Lately?

Dr. Kari Addante of TVV Decatur reporting on feline veterinary care...

Cats are notorious for their independent and self-sufficient nature.  Let's face it, most of the time they have us convinced that we need them more than they need us.  Accordingly, none of us wants to provoke the scorn and disdain of this profoundly sensitive species: they'll make us sorry for sure.  At the same time, we love our cats so much and want them to lead long happy and healthy lives.  This presents a conundrum: do I take my cat to the vet when they seem just fine and it could be so stressful?   The answer is an irrefutable enthusiastic, "YES your cat needs an annual exam!"

Arthritis and Your Pet

Dr. Adam Calcutt of TVV Decatur reports...

Affecting nearly 52.5 million people in the US alone, arthritis is  something that many of us can relate to. Maybe you are even affected or know somebody that is. It might surprise you to learn that, along with humans, a large percentage of our pet population also suffers from this degenerative disease. Arthritis affects one in five dogs and is also recognized as a disease of geriatric cats. This condition can affect all breeds including mixed breeds

Transporting Rescue Pets to Save Lives

With homeless dogs and cats reaching epidemic proportions over the last 20 years, most specifically in the southeast, rescue groups and volunteers have been dedicating an enormous amount of time and effort to a fairly new solution to the problem.  It is not a solution, unfortunately, that has or ever will solve the entire homeless pet issue but it is without a doubt helping to save many pets' lives.  The lives saved are pets who were at one time destined to be euthanized in one of our shelters.

The time and effort is spent raising money to pull as many pets as possible from the local high kill shelters - shelters that on average euthanize over 50-65% of the dogs or cats they take in and in the more rural areas of the south, the euthanasia rate is as high as 95%.  The money raised for the rescue transport is used for medical care for the pets once they are pulled from shelters, and then the cost of the transport itself.  Besides the money it takes to achieve each transport - it is tiring and grueling physically to facilitate each transport, whether it is to New York or out to Colorado - a fete accomplished by extremely hardworking and dedicated people.

The article below was recently published in the The New York Times and explains the process involved in transporting rescue pets out of the south and also reports on some of the problems that have occurred that may compromise transporting as many rescue pets in the future.
