Lakewood residents are invited to join in the city's annual tribute to the men and women who have sacrificed their lives while serving in the United States armed forces, as well as to honor the members of local veterans' organizations who have died during the past year.

The Memorial Day ceremony will take place on Monday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakewood Veterans Memorial Plaza at Del Valle Park. The memorial and Douglas jet fighter, both renovated in 2015, are located on Woodruff Avenue, between Henrilee Street and Arbor Road.

Del Valle playground opens Saturday, May 21

In anticipation of Saturday's opening day, city workers are busy putting the finishing touches on the new Del Valle playground.

The entire Lakewood community is invited to the opening day ceremony near the corner of Woodruff Avenue and Henrilee Street.

The event will begin at 10:00 a.m., with brief welcoming remarks from Mayor Ron Piazza.

You can help honor people who have 'made a difference' in Lakewood

The Lakewood City Council wants to recognize people who have made a positive difference in Lakewood with a special pin.

"Lakewood is fortunate to have lots of residents and business community members who make a positive difference, day-in and day-out in our town," said Mayor Ron Piazza. "My Lakewood City Council colleagues and I would like to express a big thank-you to as many of these Lakewood community members as we can."

City Hall will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 30. 
  • Trash service will not be interrupted.
  • There will be no street sweeping and no makeup sweep.
  • There will be no DASH Transit service.

2016 Pan Am Scholarship winners
Lakewood Pan American Association Ambassadors selected

The Lakewood Pan American Association has chosen 15 Lakewood students as recipients of its 2016 scholarship program.

Current high school seniors who live in Lakewood are eligible for the annual program, regardless of where they go to school. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,500 and are provided to help pay future college or trade school costs.

Lakewood Youth Sports signups through May 21

Signups for Lakewood Youth Sports baseball, softball and T-ball teams are ongoing at all Lakewood parks now through Saturday, May 21.

T-ball teams are for boys and girls ages 6 to 7, and baseball and softball teams are for boys ages 8 to 15 and girls ages 8 to 17.

There are no team fees for Lakewood residents, and proof of residency is required. The non-resident registration fee is $20. Birth certificates are required.

FUN-Tastic Family Night May 27
FUN-Tastic Family Night with Dr. Rusty's Dinosaur Safari

Get ready to get your "roooaaarrr" on and join Dr. Rusty as he takes his Dinosaur Safari to The Centre at Sycamore Plaza, 5000 Clark Avenue on Friday, May 27.

This interactive, theatrical performance tells the story of "Ty," a Tyrannosaurus who doesn't know if he's a carnivore or an herbivore. Through music, live puppet role play, experiments and audience participation, this show teaches audience members about the "Giants of the Past." A light meal of barbeque chicken skewers, corn on the cob, lemonade and dessert will be served prior to the show.
