Free shredding day April 2
April 2 is free shredding day in Lakewood

The City of Lakewood and EDCO Waste Services are teaming up again to help battle identity theft with the next free "Lakewood Shreds!" service day.

On Saturday, April 2, Lakewood residents are invited to the Lakewood Civic Center to safely dispose of documents containing personal information like old bank statements and tax records. The free professional shredding service has added "green" features like a mulch giveaway and e-waste drop off.

Lakewood kids get visit from Star Wars characters

Arbor Week was celebrated in Lakewood the week of March 14, and it saw city recreation staff celebrating the city's award-winning "urban forest" by putting on a fun, educational program at 13 schools and parks. Always picking a creative theme, recreation staff this year played superheroes from the new Star Wars movie, along with Lakewood's perennial "Woody the Talking Tree" character, all in an effort to teach children about one of the city's most important resources-its trees.

The City of Lakewood Youth Track & Field Meet will be held Thursday, March 31 at Lakewood High School, 4400 Briercrest Avenue, in Lakewood. Check-in begins at 4:30 p.m. with the first event starting promptly at 5:00 p.m.

FUN-Tastic Family Night features Buster Balloon

Back by popular demand, the "Buster Balloon Show" is a wild and wacky mix of comedy, magic and balloon-twisting expertise, topped off with Buster climbing into a giant six-foot whoopee cushion.

This family dinner and show event is coming Friday, April 1 to The Centre at Sycamore Plaza at 5000 Clark Avenue.  

The cost is $8 per person, $5 for children three years old and under (children under 1 are free) and includes a meal of hamburgers, mac and cheese, lemonade and a dessert. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and seating is on a first-come basis.

Mothers, grandmothers and aunts can invite their son(s) or special young men ages five and older to a fun, casual "Sequins and Bow-ties" themed event at the Lakewood Youth Center, 4658 Woodruff Avenue, on Saturday, April 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This event will feature a delicious dinner, bungee run, high striker, contests and dancing to a popular DJ. All guests will receive a keepsake Mother/Son photo.

Popular whale watching tour returns April 23

Enjoy a day out on the Pacific Ocean to see these giant mammals in their splendor while cruising along the Laguna Beach coastline. This travel program favorite is set for Saturday, April 23.

The cost is $30 per person, which includes bus transportation to the event location.
