Council Recap
At their Tuesday evening meeting, the city council approved a list of the city's annual intergovernmental goals, which includes urging the state to review the impact of Proposition 47 on crime rates. The council also reviewed plans for the upcoming Earth Walk event.

Lakewood City Hall will be closed on Monday, February 15 in observance of Presidents' Day.

Trash service will operate on the regular schedule, but there will be no DASH service or street sweeping on this day and no makeup sweep. More

Tickets are available for the 35th Annual Hall of Fame banquet set for Monday, February 29. The early ticket rate applies through Tuesday, February 16. No reservations are accepted after February 23.

Public invited to grand opening celebration on Saturday, February 20
New OSH in Lakewood

Home improvement store options in Lakewood have just increased with the January 26 opening of Orchard Supply Hardware (OSH) at the southeast corner of South Street and Palo Verde Avenue.

To introduce themselves to Lakewood residents, OSH will hold a grand opening celebration on Saturday, February 20 starting when the store opens at 7:00 a.m.

The first 100 shoppers in line that morning will receive a $25 gift card, and the first 500 people at the store on both Saturday and Sunday will receive an OSH shopping tote. There will be fun throughout the weekend too, with special deals and giveaway contests. More

Lakewood students in Rose Parade Band

Three Lakewood HS students auditioned and won spots in the prestigious 2016 Tournament of Roses Honor Band, marching and playing in the January 1st parade. Click here to watch the video now. 
 
Seniors Johnny Sanchez and Trejon Adams and sophomore Nick Lobato were chosen out of hundreds of other high school students willing to devote the extra hours to music and marching rehearsals.  "I'll definitely remember it forever," Lobato said. "It's like an experience that only comes along once in a lifetime."

Pan Am 2015 scholarship winners

The Lakewood Pan American Association's annual scholarship program is now accepting applications. Current high school seniors who live in Lakewood are eligible, regardless of where they go to school. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,500 and are provided to help pay future college or trade school costs. About 12 scholarships are provided each year. Students who have overcome adversity, made significant contributions to their schools and/or community and excelled academically are encouraged to apply by the Friday, March 18 deadline. Reservations requested for February 19 event
Assembly Member Anthony Rendon

The public is invited to a Community Roundup Breakfast featuring Lakewood-area Assembly Member Anthony Rendon on Friday, February 19 at 8:30 a.m. at The Centre at Sycamore Plaza. The event is hosted by the Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and the Boeing Company.

Mayor's Prayer Breakfast tickets on sale

Reservations are available for Lakewood's 39th Annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 a.m. featuring keynote speaker Dustin Plunkett. The event will be held in the Weingart Ballroom of The Centre at Sycamore Plaza, 5000 Clark Avenue. Tickets are $20 per person and tables of nine are available for $180. Advance reservations are required by Friday, February 19, 2016. Reservations can be made online at www.lakewoodcity.org/mpbtickets, in person at city hall or by mail. More 
$14 adoption fee on Saturday, February 13 only
Pet and girl

Give a pet a new home for only $14 on Saturday, February 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at SEAACA (Southeast Area Animal Control Authority) in Downey. The special  adoption fee applies to pets one year and older and includes spay/neuter service, micro-chip, the first set of vaccines and flea treatment. Save $70 on annual property tax
'Homeowners' Exemption' form due February 15
Monday, February 15 is the deadline to file for the "Homeowners' Exemption" to save $70 a year on annual property taxes. An owner only needs to apply one time, and the exemption is then deducted from your property taxes every year automatically.

To receive the $70 exemption, you must own the home and it must be your principal residence. Apply using the County Assessor's website Form BOE-266 (Claim for Homeowners' Property Tax Exemption).
