Through Sunday, January 3
Family by holiday tree
There are just a few days left to see Lakewood's 24-foot-tall, decorated holiday tree at the Lakewood Civic Center. Each evening through January 3, the tree will change color to music every half hour from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The tree is located in the plaza between city hall and The Centre at Sycamore Plaza at 5000 Clark Avenue.
Free supervised activities for kids starting Jan. 4

Students will have a variety of things to participate in while parents can be assured that their children are properly supervised in a safe and creative environment.

Lakewood resident Wynona McGowan Sheffield
Wynona Sheffield
Economically needy children in Lakewood's Project Shepherd program have traditionally written a simple gift wish on a paper bear ornament as part of the Project Teddy Bear Tree. Residents then select paper ornaments and become anonymous Santas for the children. As part of the Shop Lakewood campaign, those who fulfill Teddy Bear wishes while shopping in Lakewood can enter a raffle for a $100 gift card, courtesy of Lakewood Center.

The Teddy Bear helper and winner of this year's raffle was Wynona McGowan Sheffield, and she's no stranger to helping those in need. Known affectionately as "Willie," the spry 101-year-old Lakewood resident has volunteered with Meals on Wheels for almost 30 years, and was named their Co-Volunteer of the Year in 2010.

Her caring nature goes back a long way, having served as a nurse in the Army where she earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant. She has an adventurous spirit too that hasn't waned. She's active in dance and song and is quite the daredevil, having ridden a motorcycle on her 90th birthday, hot-air ballooned on her 95th, and she still wants to bungee jump.

Thrilled to win the gift card, Willie has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren to spend it on while shopping at Lakewood Center.

December 28 through January 8
EDCO recycling can
For two weeks after Christmas (from December 28 through January 8) EDCO will pick up discarded Christmas trees on your trash collection day. Flocked trees are OK, but decorations, tinsel and metal or plastic stands must be removed. Wooden tree stands can be left on the tree. The tree must not be in a bag. Trees over six feet tall must be cut in half.

For the week immediately following Christmas, from December 28 through January 2, EDCO will run an extra truck each trash day to help residents with added holiday-related trash. Residents should continue to use their existing carts as much as possible, but you can also leave up to 10 standard-size trash bags about two feet from your cart for pickup. Holiday and appliance boxes may be left there as well. There is no charge for this extra service and no need to call EDCO in advance. More
