'Tree house' fitness center among its design attributes

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Long Beach/South Bay Chapter has awarded the recently renovated Weingart-Lakewood Family YMCA at Carson Street and Woodruff Avenue with a 2015 Design Award for the building's transparency, openness and visual presence from the street. "This recognition is particularly important because it shows that even a non-profit, with limited means, can garner a design award amongst projects with seemingly unlimited budgets," said Bob Murrin, President of the AIA Long Beach/South Bay Chapter. "The YMCA and the architectural firm of Studio One Eleven, of Long Beach, should be commended for having the vision and understanding that good design is good for business and the community." More

Drop off cards and letters through November 14
|
Last year, the City of Lakewood launched its first "Thank a Soldier" campaign, collecting more than 3000 postcards and letters of appreciation from Lakewood residents to our nation's troops that were then forwarded to U.S. soldiers deployed overseas. This year, thanks to the support of many businesses, schools, organizations and youth groups that have signed up to help collect cards, the goal is to double that number.
At several different locations around the city, you will be able to fill out a Lakewood commemorative postcard or drop off your own letter or card. The city will then send all submissions to U.S. troops overseas through the military support group, Operation Gratitude. Cards may be dropped off through November 13 at City Hall, Weingart Community Center or Burns Community Center. The city has organized "Thank a Soldier Saturday" on November 14, when you can drop off a card (or fill out one available on site) at Palms Park Community Center, Iacoboni or Nye Library, or several businesses in town, including some that are offering a special thank-you gift to people filling out a Thank a Soldier greeting.
