Expected to open in spring of 2016

At its Tuesday evening meeting, the Lakewood City Council approved the purchase of an airplane-themed playground for Del Valle Park. The new play area will replace an older one that needed to be removed to make room for the recently renovated and expanded Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Council members expressed delight at the design of the new playground, which will include custom features like a replica of an airplane, control tower and landing strip (artist's rendering above). Funds for the new $425,000 playground were previously included in the city's FY14-16 budget. The new play area is expected to open in the spring of 2016.

Two hometown kids (Justin Turner and Travis d'Arnaud) are delivering for their teams in the National League Division Series. Both are members of the Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame from their high school days in Lakewood, and both are playing pivotal roles in the current LA-NY series.

In Monday's Game 3 Mets win, New York catcher and Lakewood High School alumnus Travis d'Arnaud went three for five, with a home run and three RBIs. D'Arnaud got the scoring started for the Mets in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single and then began to put the game out of reach with his third inning two-run homer. D'Arnaud is batting .250 in the series so far with a home run and three RBIs.

Then Tuesday night, Dodger third baseman and Mayfair High School alum Justin Turner drove in a pair of runs which would be the eventual difference in LA's 3-1 victory over New York, which kept the Dodgers alive in the best-3-out-of-5 series. Turner is batting a phenomenal .467 in the series with four doubles and three RBIs.

The decisive Game 5 is this Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in Los Angeles. Watch the Lakewood hometown guys on TBS or listen on AM 570. The winning team will advance to the National League Championship Series versus the Chicago Cubs. More
