Preserving your lawn

Aerating and dethatching your lawn are two essential ways to maintain healthy turf. Both techniques help make the most of limited watering, especially important during times of drought.

Aeration can be done any time of the year. Simply put, it pokes a pattern of holes in the soil allowing your turf to breathe more and better absorb watering. Aerating, coring, and aerifying are different terms you might hear for the same procedure. An aerator pulls plugs out of your soil. This helps loosen compacted soil and allows air and water to reach the roots.

Dethatching goes much further by removing the carpet of matted dead grass and debris that can build up over time. Since it's more intrusive to your grass, it is best done in the fall or early spring.

Water-saving outdoors; energy-saving and colorful, new paint indoors
Lakewood Center improvements
A combination of interior and exterior improvements to Lakewood Center are underway or in final planning stages. One project is expected to save 2 million gallons of water each year and will remove 73,000 square feet of turf and replace it with drought-tolerant plants.

Lakewood Center's interior refurbishment includes lighting changes to brighten the shopping experience with conversions to "green" power-saving LED lighting. There will also be a full repainting of the facility's central corridor along with contemporary designs. Other updates include stores getting new fiber optic lines and the updating of heating and air conditioning.
Classes for active seniors and long-time residents are available
Lakewood provides a wide range of programs for older residents. Travel programs, classes and other Active Plus fitness activities like "pickleball" and a walking club are popular with newly retired seniors.

Long-time services like the Senior Nutrition Program, Lakewood Meals on Wheels and DASH Transit for seniors and the disabled are also popular. There are a variety of human services available for low-income Lakewood residents through Project Shepherd. More
