Council Recap: Repaving contract awarded; new LED lights; Lourdes Baez appointed commissioner

Council Recap
At their Tuesday evening meeting, the city council selected the lowest, responsible bid of R. J. Noble Co. of Orange, CA to repave Del Amo Boulevard (between Clark Avenue and Downey Avenue). Noble has repaved many Lakewood roads before.

Work is expected to start in August and be fully completed in October, although actual roadway grinding and repaving will only take about a week.

The city's Lakewood Connect eMagazine and website will update residents on any impacts to commuting as project timing is finalized.

Special Olympians with Lakewood Mayor Jeff Wood

Lakewood hosted Special Olympics athletes from Guyana, Slovenia and Turkey in partnership with the Cerritos Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A special event at the Lakewood Youth Center on July 22 welcomed them to the city and included face painting, photos with backdrops of iconic California landmarks, a magician and an official greeting from Lakewood Mayor Jeff Wood. Gallery of photos.

Lakewood Center also treated the athletes to an afternoon of shopping fun, providing each with a $20 gift card and bag of goodies. One athlete from Guyana was especially thrilled, saying she'd never had $20 in her hands before. She spent it on a stuffed animal to take home to her sister. That evening, the Latter-day Saints church on Bloomfield Avenue in Cerritos treated all the athletes to a luau. More
