Low-cost auto insurance now offered by State of CA

If you have a driver's license and drive a vehicle, state law requires that you have auto insurance. The state government is now sponsoring a program to make basic auto insurance more affordable, helping more people drive responsibly and legally.

 

For basic liability coverage, annual premiums in this new state program range from $213 to $472. Qualifying drivers must have a valid CA driver's license; own a vehicle valued at less than $25,000; be at least 19 years old; and meet income eligibility requirements, which range from a maximum income of $29,425 for an individual to $60,625 for a family of four.

Residents are invited to safely dispose of documents containing sensitive information at "Lakewood Shreds!" on Saturday, April 18. Residents can bring up to three "bankers" style boxes to be shredded by a professional shredding company. No CDs, diskettes or other media can be shredded. More

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Lakewood Station deputies are reminding drivers of the importance of staying focused when behind the wheel. Law enforcement agencies in California traditionally step up enforcement with "zero tolerance" operations.

 

In Lakewood, using a cell phone is the most common form of distracted driving witnessed by deputies. Fines for using a cell phone can be as high as $162 and fines for other distractions that can lead to collisions and make the roads unsafe can be as high as $238. More

New report based on in-car videos shows significant distraction issues for teen drivers
Distracted "Teens have the highest crash rate of any group in the United States" reads the cover of a new study on teens and distracted driving. Based on nearly 1,700 in-car crash videos, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety argues distractions--especially talking with passengers and using cellphones--play a far greater role in car crashes involving teen drivers than has been previously understood. City of Lakewood Youth Track & Field Meet

Track meetThe City of Lakewood Youth Track & Field Meet will be held Thursday, April 9 at Lakewood High School, 4400 Briercrest Avenue, in Lakewood. Check-in begins at 4:30 p.m. with the first event starting promptly at 5:00 p.m.

 

Children born in 2000 or later may compete in up to 3 events, which include both field events and running events. Field events include: softball throw, high jump, long jump and shot put. Running events include: 50M, 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M and 1600M.


Ribbons will be presented for first place through fifth place finishers in each event in each division. Registration is taking place at all Lakewood parks. For more information, please call 562-866-9771, extension 2408.

Hearing help coming for Lakewood's seniors on April 15
Hearing help
"California Phones" is giving a free hearing screening and special phone demonstration at the Weingart Senior Center on April 15 between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The outreach is intended to help Lakewood seniors and disabled residents maintain their independence by helping them get better connected with free special phones and equipment.

Examples include sound amplified phones that make it easier to hear conversations. There are other specially designed for individuals with more significant disabilities. Please RSVP to the Weingart Senior Center at 562-630-6141. More  

Family fun in Lakewood
"Razzle Bam Boom!" brings a mix of comedy and musical styles including Rock, Country, Jazz and Cajun to The Centre at Sycamore Plaza on April 17. The evening of family fun includes dinner and entertainment like seeing Elvis juggle, and everyone in the audience will be a part of this fun show.

This affordable event costs $8 per person and $5 per child 3 years and under. Chicken fingers, mashed potatoes, lemonade and a dessert will be served before the show. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The show runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. More  

Lakewood volunteers make a difference

Volunteer Day seeks sitesLakewood is holding its 19th Annual Volunteer Day on Saturday, April 18. The event highlights Lakewood's giving community spirit as over 500 volunteers will spread across various sites city-wide to lend a hand to fellow Lakewood residents. Each year dozens of projects are completed, ranging from exterior refurbishment of homes to restoration of parks and public sites.

MLB 'Pitch, Hit & Run' youth competition coming to Mayfair Park

MLB Youth Competition

A free Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Competition for area youth is set for Saturday, April 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Mayfair Park. This grassroots program is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. It is intended to give youngsters a chance to compete free of charge in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills.

 

Boys and girls will be divided into four age divisions: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14 and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2015 MLB All-Star Game. More  

Palms Park and Community CenterU.S. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez's office will be holding community office hours at Palms Park in Lakewood on the first Thursday of each month through June. The next date is Thursday, May 7, 2015.

Pan Am Fiesta adds a Thursday night of discounted family fun

Pan Am FiestaLakewood's Pan Am Fiesta returns to Mayfair Park this May for its 70th year with a new Thursday night of fun. Discounted carnival rides for just $1 will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7. Games and concessions will also be open on the new night.

 

The four-day, family-friendly celebration continues Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The fiesta's full program of special Mother's Day events, rides, music and more runs through Saturday and Sunday. More
