 The Lakewood Run returns this Saturday. Sheriff's deputies, recreational runners, families and kids will gather at the starting line in front of the Lakewood Sheriff's Station to run the event's 5K/10K run or 5K walk course for time, or do the 1K "Fun Run." Register online now. More . . .

Residents may encounter traffic delays when traveling certain streets on Saturday, March 14, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The annual Lakewood Sheriff's Community Run begins on Clark Avenue in front of the Sheriff's Station.
Hundreds of runners, walkers and wheelchair participants will be in attendance, and Sheriff's deputies and volunteers will be assigned to traffic control and safety that morning. The race will also use South Street, Briercrest Avenue, Palo Verde Avenue, Woodruff Avenue, Harvey Way and Del Amo Boulevard. Click to review the course. Click for parking info.

Economic Forecast Luncheon coming soon

The Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lakewood will host the 2015 Economic Forecast Luncheon on Wednesday, March 25. The keynote speaker will be Mark Wilbur, president and CEO of Employers Group. Mark joined Employers Group in 2007 as the youngest CEO in the association's 116-year history. Lakewood students get Arbor Week lesson |
This is Arbor Week in Lakewood, with city recreation staff putting on a fun, educational program at 16 schools and parks. Always picking a creative theme, city staff this year are playing superheroes from the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, along with Lakewood's perennial "Woody the Talking Tree" character, all in an effort to teach children about one of the city's most important resource--its trees. Earth Walk returns to Monte Verde Park this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Come to Monte Verde Park to learn how to help keep the earth beautiful and protected. Lakewood residents and others have the opportunity to buy a commemorative brick to honor military service members, their family and the Lakewood community at the new Veterans Memorial Plaza, being built at Del Valle Park. The new memorial and bricks will be dedicated at Lakewood's Memorial Day ceremony on May 25.
Bricks engraved with the name of a military veteran can be purchased and placed along the sides of the new memorial's aircraft carrier runway. Separate bricks engraved with the name of community members and non-profit community groups can be purchased and installed on a walkway leading to the memorial. More . . .

Afterschool Activity Zone ongoing

Lakewood parks offer free after-school activities such as homework help, crafts and sports instruction. Students will have a variety of things to participate in while parents can be assured that their children are properly supervised in a safe and creative environment.

March Madness Hoops Tourney

Saturday, March 21
On Saturday, March 21 teens are invited to Bloomfield Park at 21420 Pioneer Boulevard for the annual "Three-on-Three March Madness Hoops Tournament." This free event starts at 2:00 p.m. and teams will be placed in middle or high school divisions.
Boys and girls can come out with their own teams or just register as a single player and be put on a team when they arrive at the event. Snacks will be available for all participants and prizes will be given out to division winners. Call 562-865-1717 for more information.

Saturday, March 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Beware me buckos: 'X' marks the spot where fun will be found, so chart yer course! Mothers, grandmothers and aunts can invite their son(s) or special young men, ages five and older, to a fun night of mayhem at Monte Verde Park on Saturday, March 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A young lad and queen will be crowned and all participants will receive a keepsake mother/son photo. Lakewood Youth Center versus Teen Resource Center video game battle and pizza party

Saturday, March 28 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Teens are invited to the TRC at Bloomfield Park at 21420 Pioneer Boulevard to join Recreation Leaders from the Lakewood Youth Center and Teen Resource Center. Participants are in for a fun night of video game tournaments, pizza and beverages!
Teams will be made and will compete against each other to crown the Lakewood's "Teen Video Game Kings." Call 562-865-1717 for more information.

City of Lakewood Youth Track & Field Meet

Thursday, April 9 check-in begins at 4:30 p.m.
The City of Lakewood Youth Track & Field Meet will be held Thursday, April 9 at Lakewood High School, 4400 Briercrest Avenue, in Lakewood. Check-in begins at 4:30 p.m. with the first event starting promptly at 5:00 p.m.
Children born in 2000 or later may compete in up to 3 events, which include both field events and running events. Field events include: softball throw, high jump, long jump and shot put. Running events include: 50M, 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M and 1600M.
Ribbons will be presented for first place through fifth place finishers in each event in each division. Registration is taking place at all Lakewood parks. For more information, please call 562-866-9771, extension 2408.

Friends of Lakewood Libraries book sale returns

Returning March 26-28
 From romance novels to large-format books, visitors will find surprisingly low-priced deals on used books at the Friends of the Lakewood Libraries (FOLL) sale on Saturday, March 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sale items include hardback books for $1 and up, textbooks, encyclopedias, computer materials, children's books, a 'Teacher's Table,' unusual books, cassettes and videos. Saturday, April 18
 One of Lakewood's enduring traditions is Volunteer Day, where residents help their neighbors in need and make their community a better place. The Volunteer Day program is looking for project sites for its Saturday, April 18 cleanup and fix-up event. On this day, more than 500 volunteers will fan out to locations throughout Lakewood to donate a morning's work to help their neighbors in need. Teams of volunteer workers from scout troops, schools, clubs, businesses, organizations and religious congregations will assist residents who are unable to maintain their properties themselves.
