Free class looks below the surface

Lakewood offers a "Swiss Army Knife" of water rebate offers including a new rebate for "subsurface irrigation systems." Coming this Thursday evening, March 5 is a free class in how the systems work. More . . .  

Lakewood's free Earth Walk event returns Saturday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m. Participants will learn how to help keep the earth beautiful and protected. Adults and children are invited to take a nature walk, plant seeds, create nature-themed crafts, make s'mores and learn about recycling. More . . .  

Lakewood residents and others have the opportunity to buy a commemorative brick to honor military service members, their family and the Lakewood community at the new Veterans Memorial Plaza, being built at Del Valle Park. Lakewood Run is getting close, register now

The Lakewood Run returns on Saturday, March 14, 2015 when Sheriff's deputies, recreational runners, families and kids will gather at the starting line in front of the Lakewood Sheriff's Station to run the event's 5K/10K run or 5K walk course for time, or do the 1K "Fun Run." Lakewood parks offer free after-school activities such as homework help, crafts and sports instruction. Students will have a variety of things to participate in while parents can be assured that their children are properly supervised in a safe and creative environment.

The growing sport of "pickleball" is the latest addition to Lakewood's Active Plus fitness activities for older adults. Pickleball mixes the concepts of badminton, ping pong and tennis. It's played on a relatively small court, so lots of people around the country are finding that it provides fun and physical activity but without the wear-and-tear of other sports. More . . .

One of Lakewood's enduring traditions is Volunteer Day, where residents help their neighbors in need and make their community a better place.

 

The Volunteer Day program is looking for project sites for its Satur­day, April 18 cleanup and fix-up event. On this day, more than 500 volunteers will fan out to locations throughout Lakewood to donate a morning's work to help their neighbors in need. Teams of volun­teer workers from scout troops, schools, clubs, businesses, organizations and religious congregations will assist residents who are unable to maintain their properties themselves.
