Progressive Grocer of the Month: Foothills IGA 

GFIA Chairman, Jeff Downing, of Foothills IGA is this month's "Progressive Grocer Store of the Month". See Jeff's store in Marble Hill, tucked away from major thouroughfares, 65 miles north of downtown Atlanta.

Election Day in Georgia 

Although it is not getting much attention, there are three Georgia legislative races today. In DeKalb County, Senate District 43 was vacated by Ronald Ramsey (D-Lithonia), as he becomes a judge and House District 92 became open when Tonya Anderson (D-Lithonia) vacated to run for the open Senate seat.

Also up for grabs is House District 122 when long-time Representative Ben Harbin (R-Evans) resigned to take a position with national lobbying firm Southern Strategy Group.

FDA Issues First-Ever No-Tobacco-Sale Order

Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its first-ever No-Tobacco-Sale Order (NTSO) against eight retailers for selling tobacco to minors, among other transgressions. Retailers with more than five repeated violations will face stronger penalties. Read More.

Budget Deal Could Lead to Increased OSHA Penalties

The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, passed by both the House and Senate, will raise the debt ceiling until March 16, 2017 in exchange for lifting the budget caps on defense and non-defense spending while paying for that additional spending by various entitlement reforms and other revenue generators. Read More.

Menu Labeling Update: House Bill Will Start Moving This Week

The House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Health is scheduled to mark-up legislation to fix FDA's final menu labeling regulations.
The modified version of the Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act
would apply the FDA menu labeling regulations only to foods that are standardized across 20 or more locations. Read More.

"Get Your Jingle On" to Support GFIA at the Capitol!

O.K. you party elves, are you ready to "Get Your Jingle On"? We're getting very excited about this year's Holiday Extravaganza. It should be the most festive yet! Look for more details over the next few weeks. All proceeds support GFIA's legislative agenda! 

The Holiday Extravaganza will be on Tuesday, December 1st from 7:00-9:30pm at The Cobb Galleria - Atlanta, GA.

Chairman's Charity: Pickens County FERST Foundation for Childhood Literacy. Thank you to Great Lakes Cheese for their $3,600 donation to the Chairman's Charity. With this generous donation, 100 children will receive a year  of books (includes: monthly age appropriate book, activity sheet, plus a newsletter and reading guide for the parents).
