and thanks for reading The Anthem, our choral newsletter. A new book has just been published by renown choral conductor and educator Timothy Seelig, and I wanted to let you know about it. Even though it's the end of the school year, this book has a lot of great information you can take in over the summer and use with your choir in the fall.
Timothy is a prolific writer and both entertaining and engaging in his presentation, both verbal and written. I've included a few other choral resources you might be interested in perusing if you're not familiar with his work.
(Aside - this is Jeff Girard, the instrumental specialist here. I put together these newsletter for Dick. I recently worked with a choral director that utilized several of these philosophies and techniques and it made a huge difference not only in how I sing text, but how I phrase instrumental music. And I'm far from being a choral expert, so I can speak as to how effective these concepts are.)
If you're interested in any of these books or want help finding a particular resource to fit your needs, I'll be glad to help you further. Just call (314-942-3228) or email me and give me more information about how I can help. My normal schedule at the store is Monday, Tuesday and Saturday, but Cindy, Mark or Kevin can help you out on any days I'm not here. |

The Language of Music
Timothy Seelig
Music is a unique language in itself. You may think that adding text would be no big deal, but in truth it's a huge deal. It's what separates singers from instrumentalists. It sounds like a simple issue, but it is complex as singers not only have to deal with the notes and rhythm, but the problems of making the words intelligible, and often in a language not our own. After all, how many times have you heard a chorus sing and thought, "That was beautiful, but I have NO clue what they were singing about!"
Timothy Seelig addresses these challenges with his unique sense of humor and musicality. The book includes video clips that will guide you to a connection with your audience through your music that will touch everyone, singers and audiences alike.
