this is Dick Boyd from M-R Music. Welcome back to The Anthem, our newsletter specifically for choral directors in all fields, sacred or secular. Christmas is coming and it is so hard to think about it when the weather still feels like the Fourth of July.

As choral directors we know we have to think months ahead. Hopefully this short presentation of four of my favorite Christmas cantatas from this year will assist you in your preparation for this most holy season. No season inspires the juices of composers quite like Advent and Christmas. Everyone is fascinated by a mystery and the miracle of Christ's birth is the greatest mystery of all!

Blessings on you as you sing this story!

Canticles in Candlelight
Joseph Martin

Canticles in Candlelight is a musical service of illumination that gradually fills the sanctuary or concert hall with music and light. With Scripture, narration, carols and candles, this compelling cantata tells the treasured story of Christ's birth. Filled with variety yet rooted in a traditional music vernacular, there are tasteful classical references in the arrangements as well as opportunities for congregational singing. From the hushed whisper of the "Candlelight Processional" to the festive arrangements of some of our most beloved carols, this work has something for everyone. An optional quiet ending is offered for churches wanting a more devotional closing. A full line of support products is offered as well, including a full orchestration.

Pepper Choplin

We all enjoy the beauty of Christmas-the music and candles, the greenery and crimson flowers, the holy symbols of the manger, and the star. These symbols are not merely decorations of the season. Their presence draws us into the story of Christmas each year, reminding us of the power, simplicity, and awesome significance of the birth of the Christ Child. Pepper Choplin explores these reflections of Christ through his distinctive musical style of memorable tunes and colorful harmonies, celebrating the Child in a thoughtful, jubilant, and accessible way for SATB or SAB choirs. Reherasal, Split-Track and Part-Dominant CDs available, as well as a Full orchestration.

Were You There On That Christmas Night?
Love Came Down at Christmas
Joel Raney

Love is the central theme of Christmas. The incarnation story tells us that God so loved the world that he came to earth as a Baby, and that love is creatively illustrated in this compelling Christmas work by Joel Raney. The versatile format of this cantata allows it to be performed in its entirety in a single worship setting, or it may be presented around the four traditional themes of hope, peace, joy, and love throughout the Advent season. A rich tapestry of original and familiar melodies, diverse musical styles, accessible choral settings, and engaging accompaniment options combine to ensure a rich and meaningful Christmas worship experience for your congregation. Orchestration and rehearsal CDs available.

Were You There On That Christmas Night?
Lloyd Larson

From Lloyd Larson, here is a new Christmas musical built around Natalie Sleeth's popular anthem, "Were You There on That Christmas Night?" Both traditional and contemporary songs are included like: "Sing We Now of Christmas," "All Is Well," "Welcome to Our World," and "Glory to the Newborn King!" Readings for two narrators appear between the eight choral pieces and tell the Christmas story. Orchestration and
