Whew, that cold bug knocked me for a pretty good loop the last couple of days, but better to get it over with now than next week in Chicago.

DVDs are up now. I found a lot of new orchestral performance, instructional, and documentary videos that can be relevant to our line of work as conductors and educators.

On another note - please note that M-R Music will be closed for the week following Midwest from December 23-28. We'll have our hands full taking care of all the orders and music we bring back from Midwest, plus we have to prepare for the Florida MEA in 2 weeks following, so we're going to take that time to get organized and enjoy the Christmas holiday. More information to follow!

Great Conductors - Zubin Mehta in Rehearsal
Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

On July 18, 1996, the Israel Philharmoinc Orchestra, conducted by its Music Director maestro Zubin Mehta, gave its first-ever performance of Richard Strauss' tone-poem Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche

As one of the world's foremost interpreters of the great symphonic literature, excelling in the Romantic works of Bruckner, Mahler and Richard Strauss in particular, Mehta had conducted this enormously popular masterpiece on countless occasions, but it was the first time ever that he had rehearsed it from scratch. At a press conference given to launch the series, he expressed great excitement at having the cameras present while he was working on Till Eulenspiegel with his own orchestra.

Serigu Celibidache: Firebrand and Philosopher
A Film by Norbert Buse

Norbert Buse's film is a moving portrayal of the legendary conductor. In the making of it he chanced upon a minor coup: Celibidache's curriculum vitae, discovered in the archives of the Musikhochschule in Berlin, and falsified by the conductor in order to enhance his career.

But the film's focus is also on the man who seemed always so aloof. For the first time there are interviews with Celibidache's sister and Son Serge, whose has done his own film portrait of his father. This is the portrait of a conductor who perhaps more than any other combined analysis and passion, ruthlessness and sympathy - a maestro furioso.

Salzburg Festival - Weiner Philharmoniker; Mariss Jansons, Nina Stemme
Strauss; Wagner; Brahms

With a program dedicated to the second half of the 19th century, Mariss Jansons, the Vienna Philharmonic and soprano Nina Stemme offer a superlative concert experience.

A brilliant reading of richard Strauss's tone poem Don Juan opens this concert. Then Wagner's Wesendonck-Lieder (Five songs for female voice after poems by Mathilde Wesendock), sung by the outstanding Swedish soprano Nina Stemme and the consciously down-to-earth-symphonic answer of Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor complete this extraordinary concert.

Music in the Air
Music in the Air - A History of Classical Music on Television
A film by Reiner E Moritz

Music on television has come in various guises over the last 50 years. It was already part of the program mix at the very beginning as is still around, more sophisticated than ever. Television has been instrumental in popularizing music, preserving precious moments of music making and helping to create music and performances which would not exist without it.

I lost so much time due to my cold that I may not get all the updates I want, but I'm shooting for a Reference Book update and maybe, just maybe, one more blurb about some more new issues. Plus, an announcement about a new printing service for composers who don't have a publishing home yet, OHM Music.  See you at Midwest!

I'm open to suggestions from you. Tell me about a topic you'd like me to research and present. Email me at instrumental@mrmusicinc.com with your thoughts and I'll look for an opportunity to incorporate it into a Report issue.

Until next time, thank you for your ongoing support. Spread the word to your fellow wind band colleagues!
