Dick Boyd
|
Greetings fellow choral directors, and welcome to the next issue of The Anthem, a newsletter specifically for choral directors in all fields, whether you work with a school or a church program.
For those of you who may not know me yet, my name is Dick Boyd and I've been working with choral music for over 40 years both as a performer and in sales. I'll be your guide to help introduce you to some new materials you can use for your choral program. Each newsletter will focus on a different area of new sacred, secular, or educational choral music and materials.
For those of you work who with a school instead of a church, don't worry. We'll be covering secular materials in the next issue.

All Bells In Paradise
John Rutter
We all know that John Rutter is a master with Christmas and holiday music. This new Rutter masterpiece is no exception, eternally tuneful as you would expect from him.
For mixed voices and organ, the title is taken from the 15th century 'Corpus Christi Carol". The glorious events of Christmas and the scene at the manger are brought to life as the bells in paradise ring together, announcing the birth of a savior on earth.
Listen here and join in joyful celebration this season with the music of this choral master.
Cat #HMC2364; SATB - $1.90

Dream On, Dream On
Sun Kyung Lee/Michael Burkhardt
Dream On, Dream On is an extraordinary Advent piece for SATB adult choir with optional parts for an SATB youth choir, a Treble choir, handbell choir, and wind chimes. Even if you aren't blessed with these additional singers or instruments, the piece works beautifully with just your church choir alone.
There's no recording of this work yet, but you can look at the first few pages of the choral score here. Call me if you want to peruse the complete choral score.
Cat. #50-5420; SATB - $1.85
Cat. #50-5420A; Full Score - $15.00
Cat. #50-5420B; Handbell parts - $25.00

Call to Advent
Jerome Williams
Call to Advent is a perfect anthem for the first Sunday in Advent. It's a mixed 2-part partner song including "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent". I include this not because it is new, but in case you aren't aware of it. It's a beautiful piece that requires minimal rehearsal time, so it allows you more rehearsal time for your cantata or other Christmas music.
You can listen to a performance of Call to Advent here.
Cat. #A516; 2pt Mixed - 1.70

Blest Be the God of Israel
Michael Burkhardt
This is a wonderful setting of one of my favorite Advent Hymns. Set to Hal Hopson's Merle's Tune, this anthem is scored to be sung either SATB or Unison with organ accompaniment. A reproducible page for the congregation is included, and there's a separate organ voluntary on the hymn tune that can serve as a prelude or introduction. Listen to a recording of it here.
Cat. #60-0002; SATB/Unison - $1.85
Cat. #10-707; Eight Improvisations on Twentieth Century Hymn Tunes - $12.50

There is Faint Music
Dan Forrest
Here's another stunning original by Dan Forrest. This also is not a new piece, but one you need to know. Originally for SATB Chorus and now available for SSA, I think this piece is perfect for your Christmas Eve service. Take a listen to it here and keep looking for more works from this bright new star of the choral world.
Cat. #08749800; SATB - $1.90
Cat. #08749801; SSA - $1.90

Obviously there are far more octavos of a worthy nature available than I have room to talk about here, so email me at choral@mrmusicinc.com or give me a call at 314-942-3088 and I'll help you find something else that suits you.
As promised, next issue we'll talk about secular materials for all of my school teacher colleagues out there. Until then, it's been a pleasure, and I'll see you next time.
In the meantime, please to a colleague and spread the word around that the knowledge you came to expect from the former Shattinger Music store is still available here.
