Dear , August is all about fairs, festivals and celebrations and there are some great events coming up in the next few weeks! In fact, there are so many activities to enjoy that we often have to make the very very difficult decision about what to enjoy now and what we'll have to skip until next year. I was particularly interested to hear a story on Vermont Public Radio (VPR) about Vermont's first-ever Open Farm Week, August 15-21, designed to embrace Vermont's agricultural and food experiences and make them more accessible to Vermonters and visitors alike. I've highlighted Open Farm Week in a story below. Late summer is also the time of year when Vermont's ski and winter visitors start planning for the coming ski season and every year a few will start to think about buying something rather than renting for another year. If you're thinking about selling, it might be a good time to initiate a conversation with us about listing your with house for sale. Just give me or Kathy Snyder a call at (802)824-3176; we'd be happy to discuss your options and provide a market analysis. Be well and enjoy the end of this beautiful summer!

Vermont's Open Farm Week is August 15-21

Vermont farms around the state will be opening their doors (and hearts) to the public for a week in mid-August to celebrate Vermont's agricultural heritage and allow visitors to enjoy unique on-farm experiences.
DigInVT is sponsoring the project and almost 90 farms around the state will be participating, including several in southern and south-central Vermont. DigInVT is a project of the Vermont Agriculture and Culinary Tourism Council and its purpose is to strengthen and support Vermont's food and farm communities and show both visitors and Vermonters alike the agriculture and food experiences that are available to them.

Sweet & Savory
Watermelon Salad
This is an easy, refreshing addition to almost any summer meal.
- ½ standard size seedless watermelon (more or less as desired)
- 1 cup gently crumbled feta cheese (low fat is okay, but no herbs or flavorings)
- 1 cup (loosely filled) fresh basil, mint or a combination of the two
- Flaked sea ealt for finishing
- Optional: ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes*
- Prepare watermelon - cut ½ inch cubes and place in a colander over an extra-large bowl. Refrigerate while you let the juices run for about one-half hour (reserve the juice for another use or enjoy as a drink!).
- Place the watermelon cubes in the extra-large bowl.
- If using block feta, crumble and add to watermelon.
- Remove all stems from the basil and/or mint leaves. Stack and slice thinly (i.e., chiffonade).
- Add basil/mint to watermelon and feta.
- Toss very very gently, as not to break watermelon cubes.
- I like to serve the salad on a large serving platter, but you're welcome to use a bowl.
- Chill until ready to serve.
- Just before serving, sprinkle lightly with salt and, if desired, the red pepper flakes.
* I highly recommend both the salt and the red pepper flakes. They add a delicious depth and dimension of flavor to this otherwise super simple summer salad.

A Playground for Empire: Historical Perspectives on Cuba and the U.S.A. (Sponsored by the Landgrove Historical Society) - The Spanish-American war of 1898 ended Spain's four hundred year rule of Cuba. Cuba became a U.S. protectorate and decades of instability followed, culminating in Batista's military dictatorship. The 1959 Cuban Revolution is one of the great underdog stories in history, in which a tiny band of young rebels prevailed against all odds. This nationalist revolution quickly fell under the sway of the USSR and Cuba's previously close ties with the U.S. were abruptly severed. This illustrated presentation by novelist and lecturer Tim Weed, a long-time observer of the island, will highlight recent changes in light of Cuba's long struggle for sovereignty. 5:00 pm at the Landgrove Meetinghouse, 88 Landgrove Road in Landgrove.
