February 2016
In this issue . . .
Welcome
Dear ,

Wow! That was some cold-snap, huh?!?! We probably used more fuel heating our houses these past couple of days than we had used in the earlier part of the winter. The local plumbers and caretakers have been busy with frozen pipes and have my eternal thanks!

February is a busy month with lots of activities in the area. Check out the Upcoming Events calendar below. I always try to include a variety of activities with a focus on FREE events - such as the new musical theatre showcase at the Weston Playhouse on February 20th, holiday fireworks at local ski areas and several lectures. Personally, I am excited to attend the Harris Hill (no relation) Ski Jumping on February 20-21. I've never been, but I have heard it's positively thrilling and I'll be there (weather depending).

Be well, stay busy, have fun and keep in touch!

Town Meeting Day is March 1
Landgrove's Town Hall
A reminder that Town Meeting Day is the first Tuesday in March (March 1st, this year). In order to encourage more participation, a few towns hold their meetings on the Saturday (2/27) or Monday night (2/29) before Town Meeting Day. Some towns, like my town of Landgrove, have a delicious pot-luck meal following the meeting.

According to the Vermont League of Cities and Towns, Vermont's Town Meeting tradition is "democracy being practiced in its purest form. It is the day when all the legal voters of a town have an opportunity to air their grievances; a day when true town business is addressed; and the source of a much-needed social respite towards the end of a long Vermont winter."

I had the privilege of being elected Moderator for Landgrove's Town Meeting last year and I will likely serve again this year. I'd like to encourage ALL property owners and voters/residents to attend their town's meeting and to participate in governing your town. Consider serving your community in an elected (or non-elected) role or on any of the numerous committees that make this a special place to call home. Non-resident property owners are always welcome and ENCOURAGED to attend! Come see small-town democracy in action!

Green Mountain Gourmet
Chocolate Meringues (With a Kick)

6 egg whites
1 and 1/4 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
3 tablespoons sifted cocoa powder
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper*
  • Preheat oven to 200 degrees
  • Using a stand mixer or hand mixer on a medium-high to high speed, whip egg whites and cream of tartar until they become foamy.
  • Slowly add sugar and beat until soft peaks form.
  • While still beating, add cocoa powder and cayenne and beat until stiff peaks form.
  • Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Using a pastry bag with a large round or star tip, fill pastry bag with meringue mixture and pipe into 1˝" -2" rounds or "kisses". (If you don't have a pastry bag, don't worry: just spoon into small mounds.)
  • For Valentine's Day, you could try shaping meringues into hearts. To do so, use a cookie cutter as a template and draw hearts on your parchment paper and either fill the space for a solid meringue or pipe around the outline for a hollow meringue.
  • Bake for 2.5 hours until hard to the touch.
  • Turn off the oven and leave the meringues in the oven for about one hour and until completely cooled.

* The cayenne pepper can be skipped, but it adds a surprising and pleasant flavor . . . give it a try!

Enjoy!   Enjoy!   Enjoy!   Enjoy!   Enjoy!

Bring a sandwich; liquid refreshments and dessert served. 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm (free) at the Dorset Historical Society, Route 30 at Kent Hill Road in Dorset.

There is no charge to attend this lecture, but space is limited, so call (802)824-4343 to make a reservation.
