Dear ,
This is a year for the record books, isn't it? Mid-December and NO snow on the ground. So much for the cold, snowy El Niño winter they predicted. (There! That statement alone should be enough for the Weather Gods to make their magic, prove me wrong, and make it snow!)
I ask that during the holiday season and throughout the next year that you support LOCAL stores, LOCAL restaurants and LOCAL services. Your support and patronage matter. When you shop with local merchants, more of your money stays close to home - supporting schools, emergency services, recreation centers, theaters, libraries and the many other places that make this community such a great place to live. Live local, buy local!
So, even without snow, I hope you have a great December, a merry merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year! As always, thanks for your support, your friendship and your business!

FREE Christmas Trees (Leg-Work Required)!
|
|
Claudia Harris and John Wiley cut their 2015 Christmas tree in the Green Mountain National Forest.
|
Just a reminder that you can cut your Christmas tree (legally!) in most national forests, including Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. My husband and I took advantage of the balmy 50° weather this past weekend to explore the Danby-Mount Tabor Road (Forest Road 10) out of Landgrove and we found the perfect tree about halfway to Danby.
Permits are just $5 and are available at the U.S. Forest Service's ranger stations in Manchester or Rutland.

Buttermilk-Blueberry Breakfast Cake
Christmas morning begs for an easy way to start the day and this recipe never fails to impress. Merry Christmas!
½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
2 tsp. lemon zest or more - zest from 1 large lemon
7/8 cup* + 1 tablespoon sugar**
1 egg, room temperature
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups flour (set aside 1/4 cup of this to toss with the blueberries)
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. kosher salt
2 cups fresh blueberries
½ cup buttermilk*** Notes: * 7/8 cup = 3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons ** This 1 tablespoon is for sprinkling on top *** To make homemade buttermilk, place 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice in a liquid measuring cup. Fill cup with milk until it reaches the 1-cup line. Let stand for five minutes. Use only 1/2 cup of the prepared mixture for this recipe.
- Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Cream butter with lemon zest and 7/8 cup of the sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined. Meanwhile, toss the blueberries with ¼ cup of flour, then whisk together the remaining flour, baking powder and salt.
- Add the flour mixture to the batter a little at a time, alternating with the buttermilk. Fold in the blueberries.
- Grease a 9-inch square baking pan (or something similar) with butter or coat with non-stick spray. Spread batter into pan. Sprinkle batter with remaining tablespoon of sugar.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes. Check with a toothpick for doneness. If necessary, return pan to oven for a couple of more minutes. (Note: Baking for as long as 10 minutes more might be necessary.)
- Let cool at least 15 minutes before serving.
