May 2015
In this issue . . .
Welcome
Dear ,

May is one of my favorite months of the year! We are enjoying warm days and cool nights, and the trees and grass are an amazing shade of dark chartreuse. We had temperatures in the 80's last week and much-needed rain this week, and spring is exploding all around us. The daffodils and tulips are out and lilacs aren't far behind!

There are lots of exciting things to do this summer - theater, music, farmers' markets, historical lectures and tours - and I promise to keep you updated on a wide variety of local events. You should also follow me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mary-Mitchell-Miller-Real-Estate-Weston-Vermont/55263169628?ref=bookmarks for more frequent updates as to local news and information.

As always, please be well and keep in touch.

Lawrence Hill Road Closure

The lower (eastern) section of Lawrence Hill Road will be closed through June 2015. The retaining wall along the road and in front of the Church on the Hill is being replaced and the road is closed to vehicle traffic for the duration of the work.

If you need to travel to from the village to points north on Lawrence Hill, Trout Club or Moses Pond Roads (or points south and west along Landgrove Road), you will need to take the detour north on Route 100 to Greendale Road to Lawrence Hill Road to Landgrove Road. Visitors to Landgrove and Peru are probably best served by going through Londonderry.

2 cups all-purpose flour

Pinch of salt

For the filling

Vermont Open Studio Weekend - Most Vermont craftspeople work in studios located in or close to their residences. These are places of production and inspiration located in downtowns as well as at the ends of dirt roads. Wherever their locations, they are exciting places to visit because they reflect the dynamic yet organized process that is used to produce the finished work of art. The studio itself is enormously informative because you can see at a glance how the artist works. You see the swatches that have not been chosen for the quilt or the work that is experimental or not serious enough for the gallery. Buying or ordering work during an Open Studio sale is a unique experience because you have the opportunity to speak to the artist directly. Visit www.vermontcrafts.com for more information on Vermont's Open Studio Weekend.

Screening & Discussion of "Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie" (Part Five "Ceres' Children") - On Friday, April 24th at 6:30 PM at Weston's Wilder Memorial Library. Space is limited, call 802-824-4307 to RSVP. Part Five takes a deeper look at some of Vermont's cherished traditions: participatory democracy and the conservation ethic, from the ideas of George Perkins Marsh, one of America's first environmentalists, to contemporary volunteer groups and activist movements. The film captures 21st century debates over natural resources, then circles back in time to show how these concerns originate in the ethics of farmers, who depended on the natural world for their survival. The disappearance of dairy farms has raised a tough question: how big is too big? How can Vermont survive in a world economy? Can Vermont be a model for small, local and self-sufficient farming?
