April 2015
In this issue . . .
Welcome
Dear ,

We're knee-deep in mud season - Vermont's fifth season (or sixth or seventh, if you're counting stick season and bug season) - and life is good! The snow is melting and the back roads, while still muddy are starting to dry out.

I had the chance to visit three local sugar makers this past week and I can say, without a doubt, that we're so lucky to have friends and neighbors who work so hard to make local (truly local) maple products. Hats off to them all! I have included my "secret" maple-mustard vinaigrette recipe to celebrate both the end of the sugaring season and the onset of spring (and the fresh baby salad greens that will start appearing at our local farmers' markets soon).

Just a reminder . . . not all of you are thinking about selling or buying real estate, so a referral to your friends or family who might be in the market would be most gratefully appreciated!

Be well and keep in touch.

Claudia's Maple- Mustard Vinaigrette

This is a quick and easy, crowd-pleasing salad dressing. Keeps for weeks in the refrigerator!

  • 1/2 cup walnut, olive or canola oil
  • 1/4 cup Vermont maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons coarse-grained mustard
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 1 clove garlic, smashed but whole and intact

Place all of the ingredients EXCEPT the oil in a blender. With the top/lid on, turn the blender on at a medium speed and slowly drizzle the oil through the opening in the lid. Blend for 15-30 seconds until completely blended. Put the vinaigrette in a glass jar and add the clove of garlic. Shake well. Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator until ready to use. Remove from refrigerator about 15-20 minutes before using and remove the garlic clove before serving.

Film expert Rick Winston will discuss the evolution of Hitchcock's craft, exploring his favorite themes, his relationship with his collaborators, and his wry sense of humor no matter how grisly the subject matter. By drawing on twelve film clips, starting with his 1925 silent The Lodger and continuing through to his Hollywood classics such as Notorious and Rear Window, Winston will illuminate the arc of Hitchcock's brilliant career. Hosted by the Mount Holly Town Library. Belmont, Mount Holly Town Library, 26 Maple Hill Rd, 4:00 pm. Joan McCallum, (802) 259-2318.

Colonial Meetinghouses of New England - New England's colonial meetinghouses embody an important yet little-known chapter in American history. Built mostly with tax money, they served as both places of worship and places for town meetings, and were the centers of life in colonial New England communities. Using photographs of the few surviving "mint condition" meetinghouses as illustrations, this presentation by photographer Paul Wainwright tells the story of the society that built and used them, and the lasting impact they have had on American culture. Hosted by the Town of Rockingham. Bellows Falls, Lower Theater, Rockingham Town Hall, 7 Village Square, 10:00 am. Contact the Rockingham Development Office, (802) 463-3456x110.
