January 2015
In this issue . . .
Welcome
Dear ,

Happy New Year! For more than 40 years Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate has been representing sellers and buyers of southern Vermont real estate and we have happily welcomed new homeowners and new neighbors to our community since the early 1970s. 2014 was no exception! This past year, I had the pleasure of brokering the sale of 13 homes and two parcels of land (one of which I hope to see a new home on in the next a year or two). I already had one additional sale in early January 2015 and two more properties are on the calendar to close later this winter.

In our immediate market area (Weston, Landgrove, Londonderry, Andover and Peru), 49 homes were sold in 2014, six houses are under contract pending sale, and there are 128 houses currently listed for sale. These figures include ALL activity in those towns and the listings and sales noted are for ALL of the local real estate firms, not just Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate. Looking at those numbers, I am incredibly proud that Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate had such a great year and that my work represented a large percentage of local transactions.

I plan to keep just as busy in 2015 and I am actively seeking new listings . . .

so, please give me a call!

Be well, keep in touch and have a wonderful New Year!

                                                             * as of 1/10/15

Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie

Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie

Screening & Discussion of Part One - "A Very New Idea"

Wilder Memorial Library, 24 Lawrence Hill Road, Weston

Friday, January 23 from 6:30-8:30 PM

The Wilder Memorial Library in Weston will be offering screenings of all six parts of weathered-movie-reel2.jpg"Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie" throughout 2015. "Freedom & Unity" is a six-part collaborative documentary produced by several dozen Vermont-based filmmakers. Vermonters past and present - from Abenakis and early settlers, runaway slaves, farmers, historians, politicians, activists, and newcomers moving "back to the land" - tell  how one small state has made a very big difference. The screening of Part One - "A Very New Idea" (83 minutes) will be followed by a facilitated discussion and is scheduled for Friday, January 23 from 6:30-8:30 PM at the library. Call 802-824-4307 or email [email protected] to RSVP, as space is limited.

Part One explores the roots from which the future state of Vermont grew. Samuel de Champlain steps into a canoe, paving the way for Yankee immersion into native culture. We look at early settlement, native peoples' resistance, and the little-known history of African American settlers. Pioneer rebel Ethan Allen leads the struggle for independence, resulting in Vermont's radical constitution- the first to outlaw slavery. Finally, Vermont's heroic role in the Civil War reminds us that, despite occasional missteps, Freedom & Unity- Vermont's state motto-continues to chart the state's course into the present.

For more information about future screenings of "The Vermont Movie" documentary at Wilder Memorial Library, please visit

Song of the Vikings - Like Greek mythology, Norse myths are still with us, inspiring storytellers from Tolkien to Neil Gaiman, Michael Chabon, and A.S. Byatt. Surprisingly, most of what we know about Valhalla and the Valkyries, Odin and the Well of Wisdom, the Mighty Thor, and Ragnarok or the Twilight of the Gods was written by a 13th-century Icelandic chieftain, Snorri Sturluson. Award-winning author Nancy Marie Brown brings the fascinating story of Sturluson's life into focus, drawing on newly available sources and illuminating the folklore and pagan legends of medieval Scandinavia. Hosted by the Springfield Town Library. Springfield, Town Library, Flinn Reading Room, 43 Main St, 2:00 pm. Library, (802) 885-3108.

Dustbowl Revival (Vermont Artists Exchange's Basement Music Series). The Dustbowl Revival is a Venice, California-based collective that merges old school bluegrass, gospel, pre-war blues and the hot swing of New Orleans to form a spicy roots cocktail. Known for their roaring live sets, Dustbowl bravely brings together many styles of traditional American music. Some call it string band-brass band mash up. Imagine Old Crow Medicine Show teaming up with Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens, or Bob Dylan and The Band jamming with Benny Goodman and his orchestra in 1938. It's infectious, joyous music - a youthful take on time-worn American traditions. Named "Best Live Band in LA" by The LA Weekly, each Dustbowl performance promises to be a white-knuckle ride through the history of American folk music that rarely stays just on the stage. Tickets, $18 in advance, $22 at the door, $12 for students. Information available at www.brownpapertickets.com or call 1-800-838-3006.
