September 2014

In this issue . . .
Welcome
Dear ,

The changing of the leaves takes me by surprise every year. Some years it happens slowly, other years it seems to happen overnight. This year, we seem to be on target for peak foliage during the last week of September and the first week of October.

Autumn is a wonderful time to (re)visit and explore the great State of Vermont. My advice is to take a day, enjoy a drive, see some spectacular foliage and simply be a tourist again.

Some of my favorite drives include:

* Waterbury and Stowe - a drive up and through the Notch Road (Route 108), gallery-hopping and shopping in Stowe, lunch at Prohibition Pig and visits to Cold Hollow Cider and Ben & Jerry's, all in Waterbury.
* Addison County - travel north on Route 7 and meander through Brandon and Middlebury, enjoy lunch or dinner at Cafe Provence in Brandon and picking apples at Champlain Orchards in Shoreham.
* Mad River Valley - travel north on Route 100, visit Waitsfield and Warren and then take Route 17 over "the gap" to Bristol and enjoy a late lunch or dinner at the Bobcat Cafe (opens at 4 PM).

Have fun and be safe. And, as always, thanks for your support, your friendship and your business!

September is National Preparedness Month

Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month?

Three years and a few weeks ago, the state of Vermont was devastated by Tropical Storm Irene. Our communities here in south-central Vermont suffered some of the worst damage and much of that damage was not the result of typical high-water flooding, but instead it was caused by runoff and fast-moving water. Sadly, we all now know first-hand that disaster can strike when and where you least expect it . . . even in Vermont.

In 2003, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) launched "Ready", a national public service advertising (PSA) campaign designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies including natural and man-made disasters. The goal of the campaign is to get the public involved and ultimately to increase the level of basic preparedness across the nation.

Knowing what to do before, during and after an emergency is a critical part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count. Use this site to learn about potential emergencies that can happen and how to prepare for and respond to them.

Check out the Ready website for more information, tips and lots of great resources, including guidelines for preparing a basic emergency supply kit: http://www.ready.gov/.

Spotlight Property For Sale
For the Artist in Us All

Situated on the hillside above Weston, this house was once an artist's studio and residence and it now offers a creative balance of modern and traditional spaces, with surprising and beautiful artistic touches throughout.

The original c. 1940's Cape was expanded in 1989 with a large, attached post and beam barn-styled addition built by master craftsman John Newton. Now joined together, the two parts of the house blend seamlessly and provide a mix of open and airy spaces and cozy, more traditional rooms.

There are stunning mountain and valley views from almost every room in the house. The upper part of the property has been transformed into a fun "play" area with a fire-pit, level lawns and a picnic area, and you can enjoy pretty perennial gardens, long sledding runs, and more throughout all four seasons.

September 30th is National Mulled Cider Day fruit-basket.jpg

Cool autumn nights are the perfect time to try mulled cider or wine. I usually "wing it" when making my spice blend, but I found this recipe online and it's pretty close to my recipe. So, enjoy this recipe courtesy of Food and Wine Magazine with a couple of minor modifications.

The recipe makes 8 spice "packets" and each spice packet is designed to flavor a half-gallon of apple cider or a 750 ml bottle of soft, fruity red wine, such as a Zinfandel or Spanish Roja.

  • 4 oranges, sliced into 1/8-inch rounds, ends discarded
  • 8 ounce (one piece) fresh ginger
  • 8 sticks of cinnamon
  • 32 whole black peppercorns
  • 24 whole allspice berries
  • 16 whole star anise pods
  • 16 whole cloves
  • 1 whole nutmeg, smashed into small pieces (use a cast-iron frying pan)
  1. Preheat the oven to 175. Set large wire racks on each of 3 large rimmed baking sheets. Arrange the orange slices in a single layer on 2 of the racks. Dry the oranges in the upper and lower thirds of the oven for about 4 hours, until the flesh is slightly tacky and the peel is crisp; flip the orange slices and shift the pans from top to bottom and front to back halfway through drying. Let the slices cool completely on the racks.
  2. Meanwhile, trim the ginger as necessary to fit the width of a mandoline. Slice the ginger into long, lengthwise strips 1/8 inch thick; discard the end pieces. Arrange the ginger in a single layer on the remaining rack. Dry the ginger in the oven for about 3 hours, until dry to the touch; flip the ginger and shift the pans from front to back halfway through drying. Let the ginger cool.
  3. Divide the oranges, ginger and spices into 8 pre-made 6" squares of double-layer cheesecloth and secure with twine.

Mulled Wine or Cider

In a saucepan, combine the contents of 1 packet with one 750- milliliter bottle of wine OR one half-gallon of fresh Vermont apple cider. Bring to a simmer and cook over low heat for about five minutes. Try not to boil! Remove the pan from the heat, cover and let steep until well- flavored, 5-7+/- minutes. Serve warm.

The spice packets can be stored in a cool place for 6 months.
