July 2014

In this issue . . .
Welcome
Dear ,

Some Vermonters say that the slow but inevitable road to winter begins on July 5th. That may be true, but July and August are two of the prettiest and most pleasant (weather-wise) months in Vermont.  We should be outside relaxing, playing and enjoying this beautiful place during the day and listening to great music, attending fascinating lectures and seeing world-class theater productions in the evening. Not a day goes by when there isn't something to do . . . even if it's just sitting in a rocking chair on your front porch.

Stop and visit anytime. I love seeing old friends, meeting new ones and talking about real estate, Vermont and life in general.

Secret Swimming Holes

Looking for a fun place to cool off this summer? Let me refer you to two great resources:

  •  "Take The Plunge: An Explorer's Guide to Swimming Holes of Vermont," by Dave Hajdasz, is considered the official local's guide to fun and adventure.  The book is available at the wonderful Northshire Bookstore in Manchester. Call (802)362-2200 to reserve a copy or visit their website at http://northshire.com/.
  • Also, please check out the following website for information about Vermont's secret and not-so-secret swimming holes: http://www.swimmingholes.org/vt.html.
  • When visiting these places, PLEASE remember to be safe, courteous and always respect private property and No Trespassing signs!

Chocolate . . . for a Great Cause!

On Monday, August 4, please join locals, visitors, chefs, children and chocolate-lovers of all kind to taste and delight in some of our area's best chocolate-based concoctions and sample local artisan cheeses.  The event is hosted by the fine folks at The Landgrove Inn and supports Neighborhood Connections.

Come out for fabulous chocolates, local cheeses, scrumptious hors d'oeuvres, music, a silent auction and cash bar. All under a 6,000 square foot tent! Purchase tickets at the Green Mountain Pharmacy, Neighborhood Connections and The Landgrove Inn. 5-8pm, rain or shine. Tickets: $15 if pre-paid, $20 at the door and $10 for children. Children under 6 are free.

Since the doors opened in 2009, Neighborhood Connections has become a fixture in our community, providing a wide variety of health and social services, including assisting people with access to State and Federal social service programs, offering emergency services and assistance, providing school-based health education for students, families and staff, and assisting families in making choices that reduce health care costs through early intervention.

Rather than providing many of the services themselves, Neighborhood Connections links clients with the services they need, such as fuel assistance, health insurance and food assistance, and then the staff can follow-through to be sure that these services are delivered.

Neighborhood Connections also offers a range of social services in-house, such as a revolving loan program and emergency funds when necessary. The organization works with all the local care agencies and churches, which helps to ensure that there is no duplication of services and streamlines  the process to make it less confusing.

More information about their programs and Chocolate Fest can be found on their website at: http://www.neighborhoodconnectionsvt.org/.

Green Mountain Gourmet

Picnic-Ready "Chinese" Chicken Wings

Marinade

  • 1 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 cup rice wine or sake
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 6-8 medium-sized cloves of garlic, peeled and firmly smashed
  • 2 1/2-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled, sliced and firmly smashed
  • 3 1/2 to 4 pounds chicken wings, rinsed and drained
  • 1/4 cup catsup
  • 1/4 cup Grade B or Dark Amber maple syrup or local honey

Add the first six marinade ingredients to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the garlic and ginger from the liquid and discard. Allow the marinade to cool slightly.

Place the chicken in a large bowl or deep pan and add the marinade. Cover with plastic wrap. Let the wings marinate for several hours, or overnight, in the refrigerator. If the wings are not covered by the marinade, you should gently toss (rotate) the wings a couple of times while they marinate.

When ready to cook, remove the wings from the marinade and reserve half of the marinade and discard the rest. Return the marinade to a saucepan, adding catsup and syrup/honey and bring to a boil. Boil gently until the marinade is reduced by half. The marinade will still be runny but will coat a spoon.

Preheat the oven to 450F. Depending on the size of your wings, line one or two cookie sheets with aluminum foil, liberally cover foil with non-stick cooking spray and arrange the wings on the cookie sheet(s). The wings should not be touching one another.

Brush wings liberally with the reduced marinade. Bake at 450F for about 40 minutes, turning the wings over and rotating the pan once, until the wings are cooked and the wing tips are crispy. Best served at room temperature or cold at a summer picnic.

Enjoy!

A Sense of Place: Vermont's Farm Legacy - The character of a place is shaped by its cultural heritage and folklife, the informal traditions of family and community that guide the ways in which a person plans a meal, treats a neighbor, or understands civic responsibility. In Vermont the cultural legacy of farming has strongly influenced the identity of Vermonters, and it is these distinctive traditions, which have persisted even with the decline in farm numbers, that help make the state unique. This lecture by Gregory Sharrow explores the fabric of farm culture in the past and probes its relationship to the world of Vermont today. Hosted by the Landgrove Meetinghouse.
