January 2014
In this issue . . .
Welcome
Dear ,

Happy New Year! While we westerners have been celebrating the New Year for a couple of weeks now, the Chinese will celebrate the Year of the Horse and the lunar new year on January 31, 2014.

January 31, 2014 to February 2, 2015 will be the year of the Green (or Wooden) Horse, a time that is symbolic of new beginnings. 2013, the Year of the Snake, was characterized by careful planning, but 2014 will be all about taking action. So, if you've been sitting on the fence carefully analyzing things and thinking about taking action (like buying or selling property), 2014 might be year to do it!

Here's hoping you have a wonderful winter and that Vermont is blessed with lots of snow, a busy winter and lots of time for friends and family to gather, play and make new memories.

New Interactive Snowmobile Maps Available Online

Good news for snowmobilers! In addition to the invaluable hard-copy of their trail map, the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) has a new interactive map of the state's trail system available online. It's also available as an app for your iPhone or Android! Online at http://www.vtvast.org/VAST/Trails/Interactive-Map.html.

Now you can start planning your journey and

make plans to pitstops, food and fuel from the comfort of home.

Please remember to obey speed and helmet laws and always be respectful of trail markings and the fact that much of the trail system in our part of the state enjoys the use of private property.

Green Mountain Gourmet
Did you know that January 20th is National Cheese Lovers Day? This month I'm highlighting a favorite recipe that calls for the use of a sharp Vermont Cheddar cheese. Go ahead and splurge on a good local cheese . . . it makes a difference!

Vermont Cheddar and Beer Soup

  • 2 medium leeks (white and pale green parts only), cut into 1/4-inch dice (2 cups)
  • 1 cup diced carrots
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 2 teaspoons finely chopped garlic
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole or 2% milk
  • 1 and 3/4 cups reduced-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 12-oz. bottle beer (an amber ale works beautifully)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 lb extra-sharp Cheddar (rind removed if necessary), grated (approx. 4 cups)
  • 4 bacon slices, cooked and crumbled (this can be optional)
  • 4 scallions (dark green part only), sliced thinly in rings

Wash leeks in a bowl of cold water, agitating water to remove sand. Using a slotted spoon, lift the leeks out of the water and drain in a colander.

Cook leeks, carrots, celery, garlic, and bay leaf in butter in a 4-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until vegetables begin to soften, about 5-7 minutes.

Reduce heat to moderate/low and sprinkle flour over vegetables, then cook, stirring occasionally, 3 minutes. Add milk, broth, and beer in a stream, whisking, then simmer, whisking occasionally, 5 minutes. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper.

Add cheese by handfuls, stirring constantly, and cook until cheese is melted, 3 to 4 minutes (do not boil). Discard bay leaf.

Serve sprinkled with bacon and scallions.

Mill Lane, Weston
Weston Village Fixer-Upper

This historic Weston home sits on the edge of the village, tucked away on a quiet country lane. The 2-acre lot is level and sunny. The house has good bones and is in a beautiful location, but it needs work!

Formal and informal living spaces with original architectural details; high ceilings and wood floors throughout; and, an attached large shed barn offers the opportunity for a large expansion and the creation of a great room, master suite and more. This is rare opportunity to renovate and restore a magnificent village home.
