Dear Colleagues,
You may know that Florida far surpassed other states in enrolling people in health insurance through the Federal Marketplace and Orange County was second behind Maimi Dade! Thanks to Anne Packham and our great team of Navigators, as well as our FQHCs' Certified Assistance Counselors, for all of their hard work.
Dr. Judy Wall is retiring from Nemours Children's Hospital. While we are happy to welcome her replacement on the PCAN Board, we will miss Dr. Wall and wish her the best in her "next life."
As we discussed at a recent Board meeting, we want to embark on an updated evaluation process for our collaboration. In the past, we have evaluated hospital ER impact, patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes in blood pressure and other areas, and Board satisfaction.
Our additional goal is to evaluate the economic impact of PCAN:
- Quantify in dollars the societal impact of factors such as quality of life, productivity, and the impact on the local economy
- More fully quantify in dollars the direct and indirect cost savings due to PCAN activities
- Solicit recommendations on ways to present these impacts to the community and to stakeholders
In order to ensure credibility, we are working with a long-time Return-on-Community-Investment (ROCI) expert from the University of South Florida. We will share a draft of the recommended evaluation process with the Board before we begin the actual evaluation process. In the meantime, feel free to contact me if you have specific thoughts or ideas.
Thanks for all you do, and best wishes for a happy, healthy summer!
Sincerely,
Maureen Kersmarki
PCAN Board Chair

Central Florida Family Health Center opens School Based Health Centers
|
Central Florida Family Health Center (CFFHC) is in the construction phase of its Cheney Wellness Cottage (CWC) located at Cheney Elementary School (CES) on Forsyth Road in East Orlando. Currently, with the operational funding support from the Nemours Children's Hospital, support from Orange County Public Schools and the partnership with The Winter Park Health Foundation, our School Based Health Center has been providing primary healthcare services to the students, minor siblings, faculty and staff of CES. The CWC will expand its capacity and allow for the feeder schools and surrounding community to now receive primary healthcare services. CFFHC was a recipient of the Florida Blue Foundation IMPACT grant which will provide operational support for a three year term. CFFHC and OCPS are working diligently to have this construction phase completed for the start of the 2014-2015 school year.
CFFHC has also partnered with the Evans Community School along with the Children's Home Society, Orange County Public Schools and University of Central Florida for the addition of the Evans Wellness Center (EWC). Similar to the Cheney school based health center, CFFHC has been providing primary healthcare services to the students, faculty and staff of Evans High School and will expand its services and capacity in the EWC to the local feeder schools and Pine Hills Community. The EWC will provide primary medical, dental and behavioral health services as well as minor laboratory, referral services and access to Certified Application Counselors for enrollment in state services. The EWC is in its construction phase located on Dannyboy Circle at the north end of the Evans property and is scheduled to open at the start of the 2014-2015 school year.

Dental Care Access Foundation and Partnerships in Dental Health Services
|
The Dental Care Access Foundation has partnered with the Heart of Florida United Way to provide oral hygiene education, fluoride varnish, toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss to at-risk children in the Orange County Public Schools and other agencies. We are targeting elementary schools and have reached over 1800 kids just this year! We have visited Pineloch, Ivey Lane and Cherokee schools and plan to visit these sites in the 2014-2015 school year.
The Foundation partners with UCF pre-dental students in addition to volunteer dental assistants and hygienists who wish to participate. Each volunteer works individually with one child at a time and demonstrates appropriate brushing and flossing technique. The fluoride varnish is a simple application of minerals that strengthen the enamel of the teeth and the process is quick. We spend about 5 minutes with each child and have had a great response from the schools and kids! Our summer hygiene education and fluoride varnish programs will continue with our Back to School Bash programs in Orlando from June to August.
The Foundation continues to partner with Valencia Hygiene Program at the Kirkman campus in Orlando. We provide cleanings, hygiene education, fluoride and sealants. This program has reached 72 children this year and we will have 2 additional events toward the end of 2014. We also continue to partner with Florida Hospital Foundation, United Global Outreach and the Orange Blossom Family Health Center to provide dental treatment, preventative and restorative dentistry and fluoride on the mobile dental unit. We provide these services in East Orlando targeting families and individuals who are on well water.

Health Care Center for the Homeless
Refreshes Identity
|
Health Care Center for the Homeless(HCCH) operates out of a main health center located near downtown Orlando, providing quality health services for homeless and medically underserved individuals. This health facility, named Orange Blossom Family Health Center and represented by an orange blossom tree logo, opened in 2006. As the organization has grown and even expanded services to multiple satellite sites, HCCH recognized a need to update their health center identity. Driven by a desire to demonstrate to current and potential patients that their clinics are places where health and hope can thrive, HCCH debuted their new orange blossom logo and name - Orange Blossom Family Health.
Each of the five petals represents a core value of the organization-respect, kindness, compassion, patients first, and quality care for all. The heart in the middle represents the care that is at the root of everything this organization does. For those who have health care options and for those who feel that they don't, Orange Blossom Family Health is here to care for you in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
