Dear Colleagues,

I've always been inspired by the theme of servant leadership as defined by John Gardner. I just ran across this quote: "There must be - in every segment and at every level - individuals capable of taking leader-like action to make their piece of the system work, individuals prepared to accommodate system-wide policy to ground-level realities, men and women who are not afraid to send word back up the line that newly-announced policies need amendment or reversal." If that doesn't describe PCAN, I don't know what does! And, it's time for more system-level reality:  health reform is upon us.

PCAN partners are gearing up for open enrollment in the new health insurance exchanges that are part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. Various partners have or are applying for federal dollars to hire Market Exchange Navigators to help community member's sign up for coverage (including KidCare and Medicaid for those who are eligible).

PCAN has worked on a co-operative agreement with the University of South Florida on their statewide application (with the exception of Miami/Dade and Broward) to HHS/CMS for Market Exchange Navigators. If the application is accepted, PCAN will hire, train and disseminate 12 Navigators to work in Orange, Osceola, Lake and Seminole Counties. The Navigators will focus on consumers with incomes between 100% and 400% FPL. Insurance enrollment will be open from October 2013 through March 2014. The award recipients will be announced on August 15, 2013. In addition, all three of our Federally Qualified Health Center partners have already received funding for a total of 14 Navigators who will perform similar functions.

In other news, the UCF Business Incubation Program has submitted a Letter of Intent to apply for a Round 2 innovation grant from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. Their application would address alternative care and payment models for chronic disease management. The PCAN Board voted to be included in the non-binding letter; it will be up to individual PCAN members to participate in the final grant application.

Finally, the Board would like to formally welcome a new member, Marni Stahlman, who is the new CEO for Shepherd's Hope. Marni said that Shepherd's Hope is launching a new recruitment effort for physician and other volunteers.

Best wishes for a happy, productive and ever-challenging summer,

Maureen Kersmarki

PCAN Chairwoman

Families Urged to Vaccinate After Increase in Preventable Diseases

ORLANDO - The Florida Department of Health in Orange County has been investigating a recent increase in cases of measles and pertussis (whooping cough), and parents are urged to make sure family members are up-to-date on immunizations. The recent increase in cases of these vaccine-preventable diseases unfortunately includes the death of an infant. Health officials are advising adults with infant children and those who will come in contact with infants to receive a tetanus/pertussis (Tdap) booster vaccination and to review their vaccination record with their physician to make sure all shots are up to date.

Because of the success of vaccines in preventing disease, parents may not have heard of some of today's vaccines or the serious diseases they prevent. These diseases can be especially serious for infants and young children. One example of the seriousness of vaccine-preventable diseases is the increase in whooping cough cases or outbreaks that have been reported in a majority of states during 2012. The CDC reports more than 41,000 cases of pertussis in the U.S. in 2012, including 18 deaths, which is the highest number of pertussis cases in any one year in the U.S. since 1955. Most of these deaths were in children younger than 1 year of age. (see more Families Urged to Vaccinate)

Orlando, Fla. - Wednesday, June 5, 2013 - Three of the region's most respected behavioral healthcare companies announced today that they will merge on July 1 to create one of the Southeast's largest treatment and prevention service providers.

Lakeside Behavioral Healthcare, The Center for Drug Free Living and Seminole Behavioral Healthcare will become Aspire Health Partners, a collaboration that will create a more effective and efficient system of care designed to increase client and community access to services and remove obstacles to getting help.

"The merger of the three organizations is intended to leverage the strengths of each organization and enable the creation of a model of care that reduces redundancy of services, enables development of new programs, allows flexibility, and contributes toward reducing the stigma and obstacles associated with seeking help for behavioral health issues," said Serena Frank, Chairman of the Board at Lakeside Behavioral Healthcare.(See More Aspire News)

Health Care Center for the Homeless Celebrates Dental Home Day & 20 Year Anniversary

By: Katelyn Schmidt, Marketing Associate

Health Care Center for the Homeless(HCCH) had a lot to celebrate on May 22nd. As recipients of a generous grant from Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: A Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we were able to provide dental care and fun activities to almost 100 children during the day at our Dental Home Day. Then in the evening, we held an Open House at our clinic, The Orange Blossom Family Health Center, to commemorate twenty years of serving our homeless and medically underserved community members.

Dental Home Day was created with the idea in mind that every child deserves a dental home. Each child that we cared for this day was able to partake in face painting, coloring and meeting the tooth fairy right outside our clinic! Then they were brought indoors to receive quality dental treatment and instruction on properly caring for their teeth. But it doesn't end there-all of the children will also receive a full year of free dental care here at our clinic!

As Dental Home Day was winding down, guests started to arrive for our 20 Year Open House! City officials, friends of HCCH and assorted community supporters came out to see the work we're doing first-hand. We had staff members from each department providing detailed tours of our facility, our outreach specialists telling stories from out in the field and a video featuring some of the key players of the early days of HCCH sharing their stories. It was a great way to celebrate 20 years of service and to kick-off the next 20 years!
