Major Retailers Now Require Food Safety Certification
The requirement for food safety certification is picking up momentum. Partially due to the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) by the FDA, it has become almost impossible to supply food to major retailers without being certified to an approved food safety standard.
In increasing numbers, major North American retailers are requiring food safety certification from their suppliers. Required certifications are typically those with industry recognition, such as HACCP, one of the GFSI schemes, or else passing an NSF supplier assurance audit.
The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is a collaboration of the world's leading food safety experts representing a broad range of participants in the supply chain, from primary producer to retailer.
In 2008, Walmart became the first U.S. retailer giant to require GFSI certification from its suppliers. Since then, hundreds of others have added this requirement. According to FoodSafetyTech, "GFSI's prominence in the global food industry is the result of governance by leading food safety experts of major retailers, manufacturers, and food service operators. GFSI's Board of Directors is currently represented by leaders in food safety and quality such as AEON, Coca-Cola, Cargill, McDonald's, Mondeléz, Nestlé, Tyson Foods, Walmart, and many others." The bottom line - If you want to supply food products or services to major retailers in North America, employing recognized food safety practices is fast becoming a prerequisite. We can help.
