2013 National Scout Jamboree Offers Advancement Opportunities
The first National Scout Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit Reserve is almost here. Excitement is in the air as Scouts are off to the adventure of a lifetime. As part of their preparation, Scouts have been advised that advancement opportunities will include merit badges and service projects.
Scouts will travel off-site for a day of service in one of the nine counties surrounding the Summit. Those who have their home troop Scoutmaster's permission, may use this day of service to fulfill the Star or Life service requirement. Previous national jamborees have had one central Merit Badge Midway. At the Summit, however, merit badge booths will be in a number of different locations, and boys can earn "partials" for some merit badges at adventure areas like Scuba, swimming, shooting, and archery. A list of the merit badges offered is found at Summitblog.org |
Farm Fair Scouting Families
Calling all Scouters and Scouts (Ages 10 and older) it's time for the Burlington County Farm Fair,
Wednesday, July 17, 2013-Saturday, July 20, 20-13 and Garden State Council, Boy Scouts will be a large part of the festivities!
Every scouting unit's help would be greatly appreciated this year! Each year more than 300 scouts, scouters, parents and other volunteers participate in this annual event by running the parking and doing the setup, cooking, serving and cleanup for five concession booths and operating a Scouting Recruitment Booth. We hope that you will encourage your entire Troop, Crew or Post to participate this year - both scouts (10+) and parents - for one or more four hour "shifts".
Please mark the fair dates on your calendar:
Wednesday July 17 to Saturday July 20. Registration forms and up to date information are available at www.gardenstatescouting.org/farmfair

Matching Gifts
Does your company provide "Matching gifts"? If so make sure that you remember to contact your company, let them know what you pledged, and don't forget to fill out the paperwork for them to "match" your FOS gift. It is an easy way to increase your Unit's donations!
Now is the time to turn in your Volunteer Hours to earn money for Scouting!
If your company participates in a Volunteer Hours program "Dollars for Doers" make sure to contact your Benefits Administrator or Corporate website and submit your application soon. You can turn your "more than - 1 hour a week" into money in the bank to support scouting in South Jersey. These are a few of the companies that offer Volunteer Involvement Programs (VIP) that provide $$$ based on the volunteer hours you give: Walmart, Starbucks, PSE&G, Verizon, TD Bank, Bank of America, J.P. Morgan Chase, J.C. Penny, Microsoft, Bloomberg, Bristol Myers Squibb, Intel, ING, Exxon/Mobil, Prudential, Morgan Stanley, Dow Jones, McGraw Hill. To find out how to take advantage of this program Call Mike Mahon at 856-327-1700 Ext. 25, or via email at mmahon@bsamail.org

Over 70 years of age? Giving to your favorite Charity just got Easier!

Donors may make distributions to Garden State Council, BSA from an IRA, without having to report the amount as income ("IRA Charitable rollover"). Certain requirements do apply:
- You must be at least 70½ at the time of the gift
- The distribution must come to The Garden State Council, BSA directly from your IRA administrator
- You cannot exceed $100,000 in total IRA charitable gifts for 2013
- The donated amount can count toward your required minimum distribution
- The gift must be completed by December 31, 2013
As you consider an IRA Charitable rollover gift to The Garden State Council, BSA we urge you to consult with your tax advisor. However, we are ready to help you with the process so that your charitable mission can be accomplished. For further information please contact Mike Mahon at (856) 327-1700 Ext 25 or mmahon@bsamail.org Another idea to consider: Name The Garden State Council, BSA as a full or partial beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement accounts. This is a very easy, tax efficient way to leave a bequest to The Garden State Council, BSA without having to rewrite your will! |
