Customer Service
Friends:

Thank you to the nearly 1,000 Scouters who participated in our first-ever survey of the Garden State Council! Through your feedback, we have learned a great deal about how you would like to see the council run. The comments we received are going to influence the way we do business going forward.

Based on your comments, the following changes are already in progress:
- Focus on customer service: the council will be setting up an ongoing customer service feedback process for all volunteers to let the staff know how we're doing.
- Donor designated giving: Next year's Friends of Scouting campaign will allow donors to designate how they would like their gift money spent.
- Financial transparency: At the end of 2013 (and every year after) the council will release an annual report describing funds raised and how they were spent.
- Strategic plan: The council has embarked on a strategic planning process that will be completed and shared with the community before the end of 2013.

These initiatives are only the tip of the iceberg. The council will continue to focus on new ways to improve, and continue to survey volunteers on a consistent basis to learn how me might continue to improve.

If you have any other suggestions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

2013 Cumberland
Bike Rodeo
Are you ready for the summer?
Bike rodeo

Spring is here and summer will soon be rolling around.  Young people all over the region will be pulling out bicycles for fun and transportation.  Every year we hear tragic stories of children injured in falls and other bike related incidents.  Let's prevent those incidents by teaching our children to drive their bikes safely.

The Mahalala District will sponsor its first "Bike Rodeo" on May 11, 2013 from 9-11 AM at 10000 Midlantic Drive in Mount Laurel.  This event will include helmet fit stations, bike inspection stations, and skill stations led by certified instructors from the League of American Bicyclists.  Skill stations will include fun activities on the bicycle that will help your child deal with everyday situations.

This event is open to all cub scouts and families in the Garden State Council-BSA.  Preregistration is required.  Email Chuck Jaxel at cjaxel@bsamail.org I with your Pack's attendance.   There is no fee for this activity.

Participants: Bike Shops, League of American Bicyclists, Troop 76, Mount Laurel Police Department, Brain Injury Association of NJ, NJ Bike and Walk Coalition.

2013 Jirair S. Hovnanian Scholarship Fund

In 1948 Jirair S. Hovnanian and his family immigrated to the United States of America in search of finding the American Dream.   Through years of hard work, dedication and adherence to a strict code of ethics and morals, Mr. Hovnanian and his family have realized that dream. As the founder of J. S. Hovnanian & Sons, one of the area's largest builders of quality new homes, Mr. Hovnanian felt a desire to give back to the community. In 1998, in celebration of his fiftieth year as an American citizen, Mr. Hovnanian created the Jirair S. Hovnanian Scholarship Fund.

The purpose of this fund is to award scholarships to youth who are registered members of the Garden State Council, Boy Scouts of America, to assist young people in their pursuit of the American Dream. Interested youth are encouraged to read the attached documents to determine their eligibility and then complete the required application and submit it to the Garden State Council, Boy Scouts of America.

All applications must be submitted to either Scout Service Center by May 31, 2013. All applications will be reviewed and the winners will be notified by phone. A check will be presented to the recipients at the Council Executive Board Meeting on JUNE 17, 2013.

Harris Study Findings on Scout Camp
Scouts indicate that summer camp is more than just a place to have fun. It also offers Scouts the opportunity to participate in physically and intellectually challenging activities, introduces them to new and rewarding experiences, and provides them with supportive and caring relationships. This study infers that positive outcomes of Scout summer camp occur because the environment and activities at camp incorporate all of the elements of healthy youth development.
