The Gospel According to St. Mark's

Don't forget to set your clocks forward an hour on Saturday night! The good news is our morning service is an hour later this Sunday. Join us at 10:00 am for a combined service and stay for lunch. The Annual Meeting begins at 12:30 pm. There will be children's chapel at 10:00 am.
From the Reverend Michele Morgan, Priest-in-Charge

We're in the news! The Episcopal News Service highlighted our Lenten Dioramas. Read all about it HERE

A quote from the article: "When asked what they'd like Episcopalians and others in the United States to understand about refugees and their plight, Abualteman said: 'We are innocent people leaving our countries by force, leaving our memories, traditions and families because of the security situation.'"

Remember our mite box collection will support Episcopal Migration Ministries and National Capitol Area Lutheran Social Services Refugee Resettlement Program.

1. Be over the age of 15 years old AND
2. Made a financial contribution to the parish over the last 12 months (1 March 2015-13 March 2016) AND
3. Been recorded in the register of the Parish as a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church OR affirm your wish to be a member by either:
a. Made a pledge for 2016; OR

c. Become confirmed in or received into the Episcopal Church through St. Mark's

If you are at all unsure whether you're eligible to vote or if you are sure you are eligible to vote but did not see your name posted on the bulletin board in the foyer, please contact me. I'll also be at the check in table to answer any questions or address concerns. The people of St. Mark's, the ones who show up Sunday after Sunday, who put in the volunteer hours, who are still here as clergy come and go, are the ones who control the destiny of this place. We want to make sure everyone who wants to have a voice has an opportunity to participate.

Peace,
Justi
From Peter Sherer, Senior Warden

Hello Dear Ones,

A few thoughts this week.

Please Come to the Annual Meeting

It is very useful for us to gather annually as one large group to think about our governance and how to keep the ship of state moving forward.

We will have one service at 10 am followed by lunch and the meeting at 12:30 pm. (Remember to plan for the start of Daylight Savings Time.)  We will have a chance to hear from Michele on her thoughts about how we move forward, focusing on St. Mark's as part of Capitol Hill, especially on inviting people to move more deeply into our life together.  We will hear from 7 excellent candidates for the Vestry (you can read their statements HERE), say thank you to three hard working Vestry members and our Assistant Treasurer, a brief report by our Treasurer Andrew Stafford, a few words from the Wardens, and a vote on a change in the bylaws to extend the terms of the Wardens.

Hope to see you there because more is definitely merrier.

The Bylaw Change to Lengthen the Terms of the Wardens

At the moment the Junior and Senior Warden are elected for one year terms and can serve for two years if they are reelected for a second year. The proposal is to have the Wardens elected to two year terms with the possibility for a third year of service.

The rationale for the change is that there is both a steep learning curve for any new Warden and many new ideas require a two-year planning horizon.  The learning curve argument is that it can take a new Warden some time to figure out their actual agenda and that the one year term leaves little room to pursue it before having to start running again. The two-year time horizon view is that it fits making a change in direction, evaluating its impact, and fine-tuning the new approach in the second year.

The main arguments against the proposed change is that it is unnecessary since most Wardens already serve two year terms and that the present approach makes it easier to get rid of someone if they are not up to the job.

On the whole I am in favor of the proposed change based on my experience over the last year.

Some News

I have received almost one hundred emails and notes saying how pleased people are that Michele has been called as our Priest-in-Charge. Two people wrote to say that while they are big Michele fans that they didn't think calling an Interim Rector was a particularly good precedent. I understand that concern but the Vestry felt she was such a good fit that an exception to the rule was justified.

I have also heard from a number of people that they have not yet had a chance to get to know Michele and that they would like to meet with her in a small group setting. Michele is giving me 20 dates when she would be free for brunch, lunch, dinner or coffee in groups of 6-8 people. I am looking for someone to find hosts and coordinate the schedule. Does that assignment appeal to you?

One Last Thought

The Maundy Thursday Reception and Dinner planning team of Raifford Gaffney, Elin Whitney Smith and Marilu Sherer are in high gear. You can sign up on line HERE or on Sunday. Better hurry because this always sells out very quickly. Please know that Michele has a table and is hoping that folks who do not know a lot of people and want to be a part of the dinner will contact her.

From the Vestry

A few weeks ago, we asked you for suggested questions to ask the candidates at this Sunday's annual meeting. And you did! Below are the questions we collected. Join us on Sunday at 12:30 pm to hear the answers. Click HERE to read about the candidates.

POSSIBLE VESTRY CANDIDATE QUESTIONS

  • Many people don't belong to any church. What would say to someone who is unchurched that would make them want to come to St Marks?
  • Choose a pillar at St. Mark's on which you'd like to focus your attention as a Vestry member (Christian Ed, Parish Life, Worship, Arts, Outreach). Why would you focus on this pillar and what would you hope to accomplish in your three years of service in this area?
  • Imagine that you have served on the Vestry for your three-year term. What is one thing about our community that is different at the end of your term and how did your service on the Vestry affect this one thing?
  • One of the 12 challenges we have identified for the St. Mark's community is attracting and retaining new members of our community. What is one thing you think our community needs to do differently to retain new members and how can the Vestry support efforts to make that change?
  • One of the 12 challenges we have identified for the St. Mark's community is strengthening Christian Education gateway classes. What is one way you think we can improve these classes and how would you as a Vestry member help make the change happen?
  • One of the 12 challenges we have identified for the St. Mark's community is developing lay leadership. What is one thing you think we can do differently in this area and how can the Vestry's work support this change?
  • One of the 12 challenges we have identified for the St. Mark's community is building effective youth and family ministries. What is one thing you think we can do to build a more effect youth and family ministry and how can the Vestry's work support this change?
  • One of the 12 challenges we have identified for the St. Mark's community is taking care of our neighbors.  What is one thing you think we can do to be a more visible presence in our local community and how can the Vestry's work support this change?
  • One of the 12 challenges we have identified for the St. Mark's community is strengthening parish communications. What is one thing you think we can do to more effectively communicate with our community and what role should the Vestry have to effect this change?
  • What's the one most important thing you would do to make Michele's next three years as Priest-in-Charge successful?

Anthony Harvey playing the theorbo (a large lute) at last Sunday's 11:15 service.

Dear St. Mark's,

The Teen Choir makes its debut this coming Sunday!  Led by Nadine Hathaway, this breakaway group from the Boys & Girls Choir - made up of a handful of teens - is eager to sing their spirited song "Dwell in the House" for the congregation during communion.

The Boys & Girls Choir, directed by Libbi Rivera, will be joined by some women from the Chancel Choir to sing a lovely song titled "Lorica of St. Patrick." Some may recognize the text as part of the hymn St. Patrick's Breastplate.

The Chancel Choir will sing Howells' gorgeous anthem "Like as the hart" in addition to a setting of "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy."

Next Sunday's morning services will see the return of the Passion reading with dance and music.  We'll be joined by special musical guest Amy Domingues on cello.

Peace,

JEFF
