The Gospel According to St. Mark's
From Peter Sherer, Senior Warden

Hi Dear Ones,

A couple of important updates.

The Rector Search

The Vestry has made a unanimous choice of someone to lead our wonderful community and I am negotiating the final details now. I am preparing a letter to go out to everyone at the beginning of next week that explains how we reached our decision and invites you to contact to let me know what you think about the Vestry's decision.

A Wonderful Training Opportunity

The Bishop has organized two days of workshops on parish management that look very good. The workshops are open to any interested parishioner and I hope that many of you will be willing to go so we all can become smarter.

The workshops are on Saturday February 27th and March 5th Learn more and register on the website.

The workshops are free and they ask for a $25 contribution to offset the cost of lunch. Not only are the workshops intrinsically interesting but I am looking forward to spending time with people from other parishes to find out how they do things that might be useful to us here.
Please check your calendar and see if you can participate. This is definitely a situation where more is merrier.

Hugs all around.

Peter
From Jeff Kempskie, Director of Music

Dear St. Mark's,

We continue with the meditative Taize music this coming Sunday.  The choir (and music director) learned much from the experience this past Sunday and look forward to getting more comfortable each week we do the music; it's a good challenge.  Please know that if there is music included in the bulletin, it is intended for you to sing!  Also, keep singing, even when the solos are taking place.

In just more than a week, St. Mark's will host a fabulous concert by the Cantate Chamber Singers on Saturday February 27th at 5:00pm.  I invite you to attend this concert of awesome music!  The group will be singing the incredibly beautiful and VERY difficult motet Singet den Herrn ein neues Lied by J.S. Bach.  (Follow the provided links to give these gorgeous pieces a listen!)  Music by Brahms will include this motet and this one on Psalm 51.  The Bowen McCauley Dance Company will dance to some of Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes as well a special performance of Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb. St. Mark's own Jeff Kempskie will be singing with Cantate.  General admission tickets are $35, $15 for students, free for those 18 and under.  A reception will follow the performance.

Lastly, I hope you'll be at St. Mark's during the morning services on Sunday March 6th, which is "Laetare" Sunday or mid-Lent.  We'll take a break from the Taize music and the Chancel Choir will sing parts of a Latin mass setting by Domenico Scarlatti.  We will have a special guest, Anthony Harvey, accompanying the choir and playing some solo pieces on his theorbo.  The theorbo is a large, funny-looking guitar from the Baroque period.  You can watch a video and listen to Anthony play a piece here.  It will be a musical treat this date.

Peace,

JEFF
