The Gospel According to St. Mark's

From the Vestry

Everyone who volunteers at St. Marks does it in a different way.  We'll share some of their stories in the upcoming weeks in the E-gospel.  But each person knows that volunteering is giving the gift of you to the church.

From Vestry member, Nora Howell

Why did I run for Vestry?  The answer is so simple:  someone I respect told me she thought I would do a good job as a Vestry member and she asked me to run!  End of story.
What did I get out of it?  Another simple answer:  I feel like I am a fully contributing member of one of the strongest teams I've ever served on.  A big project will come up (for example, prepare for the Annual Meeting) and Peter asks one of us to manage it -- hear the "ask" again? Of course, we say, "yes!" and it's done; don't give it another thought because that Annual Meeting is perfectly organized.  It makes me want to give the best I have to contribute to this amazing team.
From Doris Burton, Junior Warden

Around the House...Notes from the Junior Warden

Q&A:
1. What gives with the new freezer and fridge--why are they not accessible?
First: both appliances are working. The freezer needed a new compressor (more in a minute) and that has been done. The issue now is the lack of dedicated circuits for them, the old fridge, and the icemaker. It seems that, during construction, someone (we don't know who) overlooked the requirement of dedicated circuits. To be fair, the kitchen was something of a nightmare: we changed layouts, learned upon delivery the selected icemaker wouldn't fit in the pub because of an unexpected breaker box so went into the kitchen instead, and made so many small changes that it's impossible to determine the responsible party. Until I can have two, new, dedicated lines installed (hopefully, next month) to protect all the appliances in that area, we're back to one fridge.  Patience, please!

2. There's another hole in the undercroft ceiling. Another leak? Yes. This one appears to be very slow and small. Because of that, there's been no rush to repair but it will be taken care of soon. After, both that and the hole in the hall will be dry-walled and painted. Those pipes are 25 years old and leaks were predicted to occur.  We may have more before Fabric and the JW determine we need to replace the entire line.

Elections:According to our current bylaws, both wardens serve one-year terms though we can run for a second year. If you are interested in running for Junior Warden and would like to know more about what is expected and how the job has changed (and continues to-this time, for the better!), please contact me. It's not your grandfather's Junior Warden but--already-in one year-you'll find the changes will make the job easier, not harder.

Security Suggestions:

  • When parking in public places: make sure your registration, GPS, and garage remote are either removed or locked in the glove box. If a thief finds your registration and your remote is available, s/he can get into your home before you do.

  • When programming your GPS, use the address of a nearby business to get you home. It will give you the directions needed without giving away too much info to a thief.

  • If your ID is stolen (a wallet, etc.), make sure someone remains at home when you go to pick it up in case the message is meant to lure you away so thieves can enter your home.

  • Cell phones: avoid using the word 'home' or 'husband/wife/spouse/partner'. Use a code to call your home phone (a special word not associated with your name or address).

  • Confirm texts before acting on with shared information or meet-ups.
