The Gospel According to St. Mark's

From Jeff Kempskie, Director of Music

Dear St. Mark's,

The Earth Mass (Missa Gaia) is coming in just over two weeks! For those of you who have yet to experience the mass, I'll tell you a little about it. The Earth Mass is a multi-movement choral and instrumental piece commissioned by the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in 1981 that includes of variety of styles of music including jazz, gospel, and other "contemporary" sounds.  The recorded sounds of the wolf, humpback whale, harp seals, and birds are tastefully incorporated into various parts of the music, which is is scored for chorus, soloists, soprano saxophone, cello, piano, organ, percussion, and more.  What's also exciting is that we will also have liturgical dancers from the Dance Studio and a slideshow of nature images that complement the music.  Add to that the Blessing of the Animals, by the way!  I'm talking about October 4th at 10:00 am.  There will be a choral prelude beginning at 9:50, so come early to hear that awesome part of the Earth Mass as well!  This is a perfect service to bring along a friend!

Peace,
JEFF
From the Reverend Michele Morgan, Interim Rector

As you have probably heard, our longtime maintenance contractor Ed Green, and his wife Lucy, lost their beloved daughter, also Lucy, in a car accident last weekend. Funeral arrangements have been announced. On Friday, September 25, 2015, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, the family will host a viewing at the First Baptist Church of Highland Park (6801 Sheriff Road, Landover, Maryland 20785). The funeral service will follow immediately at 11:00 am, also at First Baptist Church. Condolences may be sent to Ed and his family in care of First Baptist Church of Highland Park. I know members of our community continue to hold Ed and his family in our prayers and thoughts at this difficult time.

Peace,
Michele
From Peter Sherer, Senior Warden

Hi All,

Well the headline this week is the absolutely amazing job that the 20s and 30s, with help from hardworking Middle timers, did to make the Parish Picnic a colossal success.

The 20s and 30s Leadership Team of Lisa Ramish, Jeb Ory, and Blair Ford ordered the food, organized volunteers to bring salads, desserts and drinks, managed communications to insure a full house, and organized set up and clean up. They were ably assisted by representatives of the Middletimers Group (the 40s and 50s) including Donna Sabino who did everything imaginable before during and after. Rob Hall brought a ton of ice, Beth Mahood and Kim Bayliss and Jim Brooks were very hands on and Julie Murphy was helpful all around including taking care of the many little kids who had games and face painting exquisitely organized by Caroline McReynolds- Adams. Great going Caroline on your first event. Amazing job.

The chefs of the day who made hundreds of burgers and hotdogs included our very own Christian Ed Co-Director Joe Calizo and Vestry member and Chair of the Membership Committee Mary Thuell. Thanks for wearing a million hats.

Other picnic heroes included our standard stalwarts Doris Burton, our smart and hardworking Junior Warden, Jack Burton our faithful Manciple and my delicious bride Marilu Sherer, the Pillar for Parish Life. Doris besides rolling up her sleeves was the go to person for questions about where things were and kitchen protocol. Amazing how willing these guys are to pitch in even though they carrying substantial volunteer loads already.

Thanks too to Jack Richards who very alertly noticed that we had extra food and who volunteered to get the leftovers to people in need. Jack reminded me that planning to get leftovers to those in need should be part of the regular planning for any event where we serve food to a large group. Great work Jack.

There were so many other people who lent a hand by bringing a salad, dessert, beer,or other drinks and you are too numerous to mention. I want each of you to know that we couldn't have done it without your help and that the entire village benefitted from your unsung support. Many thanks.

Another topic.

There is a Vestry meeting this Sunday at 12:15pm and you are all invited. The Vestry will take a first look at the preliminary budget for 2016 prepared by our Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer Andrew Stafford and Penny Hansen respectively. They lead a remarkable Finance Committee that meets every month to make sure that we stay on our budget and that unexpected needs are covered by the appropriate account.

Speaking of the Canvass please put October 4th on your calendar because Mike Townsend and Nora Howell Co-Chairs for Stewardship will lead a Town Hall after the 10 am service along with Jim Ashley and Nadine Hathaway the leaders of the Discernment and Search Committee. So if you want to be up to date on the search for a new Rector and the canvass please plan to join us.

And last but certainly not least.

Get ready to put on a costume and your dancing shoes. Keith Krueger and the Middletimers have been planning for months to make sure that we have a wonderful time at The Saints and Sinners Halloween Dance on Friday October 30th. There will be Nursery coverage and we will arrange rides for people who don't want to drive at night. So I expect to see everyone from a few months old to our Third Agers out on the dance floor together. More to come on tickets and other hot news.

Hugs all around.

Peter

Even as we begin the second year, we still hear ooh's and ah's when visitors and newcomers see our beautiful new space. On Wednesday night, Monarch Construction received the 2015 annual Metropolitan Washington Excellence in Construction award honoring the outstanding quality construction of commercial projects costing $2-5M produced by a member of the Associated Builders and Contractors' Metropolitan Washington and Virginia Chapterfor our building!
to Monarch Construction and by Ed Corr, a member of the Vision2020 Steering Committee.

More than 140 projects were entered in over 30 categories and were judged by a panel of 100.

The award was accepted by Tri Phan who continues to serve as our liaison

We are excited for Monarc and thrilled to have been their chosen entry.

Last June, Bonstra/Haresign, our architects, had professional photos taken of our building. We have access to them and if you'd like to glance thru them as well as seeing some 'before' photos as well as drawings, go to www.bonstra.com, then click on Projects, scroll to a pic of the Parish House, click the right arrow to see all. The photos are gorgeous and will serve us well as we publicize use of our space.

In Memoriam: This Sunday, the Vestry will be planting a camellia in the newest garden bed in memory of Suella Henn. If you would like to remember a loved one with a contribution to the garden, please contact the Junior Warden.
