The Gospel According to St. Mark's
From Caroline McReynolds-Adams, Director of Youth & Family Ministries

Dear St. Mark's Community,

It is hard to believe that this day has finally arrived -- I am officially on staff as the Director of Youth and Family Ministries! I am thrilled to be here and have already experienced the beautiful hospitality of this community. My husband, Brett, and I want to extend our many, many thanks to each of you for all of the assistance and guidance given as we prepared for this BIG move. We truly could not have done it without you!

Brett and I along with our boxer mix, Lola, made the ten-hour trek to our new Capitol Hill home from our native Nashville, TN earlier this week. Since then, we have experienced the convenience of early morning walks to Eastern Market, the joys of lugging boxes in DC humidity, the stresses of street parking, the tinge of missing our old home, and the excitement of creating a new one here with all of you.
While Brett has a few more days before his start date at the Association of American Medical Colleges, I have already begun the process of getting to know this parish and the youth and family ministries program here. In the midst of sifting through old files and sending a slew of introductory emails, I find myself extremely moved by the amount of parishioners who have a strong, loving presence in the lives of the youth at this church. The passion and dedication towards this ministry is obvious, and I am humbled to be a part of it.

While there is much about which to be excited during this time of new beginnings, what I am most excited about is meeting the youth and parents of St. Mark's! Meeting you all as soon as possible will help ensure that this transition is swift and seamless. Therefore, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I would love to sit down with you, get to know you, and hear your hopes and dreams for this ministry.

As Saint Benedict said, "Always we begin again," and I am beyond grateful to be able to begin this exciting new adventure in the midst of such a wonderful, loving community.

Peace and love,

From Jeff Kempskie, Director of Music

Dear St. Mark's,

With September approaching, this is a good time to consider participating in the music program at St. Mark's.  We have an exciting season shaping up - including singing the Earth Mass (Missa Gaia) on Oct. 4th - and would love to have new people join us!

The Chancel Choir, which rehearses in the nave on Thursdays from 7:30-9:30 starting Sep. 3rd, is open to high school students and adults.  No prior experience is necessary, but the ability to match pitch is required.  Please note that we are in particular need of basses at the 11:15 service, so to all the men with lower voices, please think about joining us.

The Boys & Girls Choir, open to children in grades 1-8, will start the season with a retreat on Saturday Sep. 12th from 10am-3pm.  The rehearsal days/times are still to be determined.

The Handbell Choir rehearses downstairs in the Elders' Room most Wednesdays from 7-8:30 starting Sep. 9th. This fun group requires no prior experience with handbells.  All are welcome!

There are other opportunities to participate in the music program, such as if you play an instrument or wish to sing a solo or duet sometime.

If you are "on the fence" or are otherwise interested but unsure if you can sing or ring, please let me know and I would be happy to meet with you and give you some feedback and encouragement.  I also wish to remind you how much fun it is to make music!

Peace,
JEFF
