The Gospel According to St. Mark's

From the Reverend R. Justice Schunior, Associate Rector

Friends,

This was the scene from last night's Prayers in the Park. These are the weekly night prayers we have been saying, together with Christ Church, Capitol Hill in local parks throughout June and July. If you're interested in updates, text

Last night, what looked like maybe threatening weather as we set out from St. Mark's to Garfield Park at 3rd and South Carolina, SE, turned into a torrential downpour once we got there.  All seven of us were soaked.  I abandoned my shoes to walk through the mud and take cover under a tree.

But like most typical summer storms, the clouds cleared for a moment and in the few dry moments we had, we lit our candles and prayed together. This is such a good description of my life right now - there are sometimes only a few minutes of deep breathing, prayer, and fellowship, before the next storm comes. But there is also joy in rushing with friends to find some shelter and encouragement to be found in the fact that we were there together.

Stephanie Deutsch read Psalm 121:

I lift up my eyes to the hills-
   from where will my help come?
 My help comes from the Lord
   who made heaven and earth.
 He will not let your foot be moved;
   he who keeps you will not slumber.

He who keeps Israel
   will neither slumber nor sleep.
 The Lord is your keeper;
   the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
 The sun shall not strike you by day,
   nor the moon by night.
 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
   he will keep your life.
 The Lord will keep
   your going out and your coming in
   from this time on and for evermore.

We all prayed together:

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake.

Amen.

Tomorrow, St. Mark's will tearfully and joyfully celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved Suella Henn; soothe the suffering. Meanwhile, I'll be in Charlottesville, blessing the union of two former St. Mark's parishioners; shield the joyous. These moments of prayer before the storms let loose sustain us.

Last night was a very brief in breaking of peace so that we might bless the day and prepare us for the evening. Granted, it was a damp peace, but it felt good nonetheless. I pray that each of us takes those moments wherever we are, whatever storm clouds hang above us, to bless our experiences and our companions.

Peace,

Justi
