Prayers for Charleston

From the Reverend Justi Schunior

Friends,

The news this morning was grim. Nine people were killed last night while gathering for prayer in the historic Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. While we will continue to grapple with this horrific tragedy in the time to come, I wanted to pass on the words of our Bishop, Mariann Budde and the Cathedral Dean, Gary Hall (see here). Please read what they have to say. I was impressed and proud that they immediately called out the sins of racism and gun violence that lie at the heart of this massacre. They also point toward a path of solidarity and love.

Today, until I leave around 7pm, the Nave will be open for prayer. Tomorrow, I will also have it unlocked for all those who need a quiet place to reflect, pray, and grieve. On Friday at 7 p.m., the diocese invites us to gather in prayer at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1514 15th Street NW, for a service of mourning and healing.

Peace,
Justi

CompassionateGod, draw near to us in this time of sorrow and anguish, comfort those who mourn, strengthen those who are weary, encourage those in despair, and lead us all to fullness of life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen. (from 'Holy Women, Holy Men').
